In 1980, his teammates voted him the Most Valuable Player Award, the first time for a sophomore at Michigan. In 1982, he was Michigan's Captain and named the MVP of the Big 10 Conference. In his career he had 36 touchdowns, 33 on pass receptions. He scored 240 points, which was a Michigan record, breaking the previous mark of 237 set by Tom Harmon in 1938-40 seasons.
