Chaos on the sidelines

One of the more interesting parts of the Michigan - Ohio State game was the chaos that appeared to erupt on the sidelines early in the 1st quarter. At this point Michigan had already intercepted a Pryor pass and missed a FG. The horseshoe crowd was obviously very loud and confusion seemed to setting in.

I promised I would "look at the tape" to figure out what happened. The ABC announcers said it was Charles Stewart (and other defensive players) yelling at the coaches. In my opinion, they were wrong. The players were not yelling at the coaches. Both the players and coaches were yelling at some "dude" on the sideline. I don't know who he is, but he has a Michigan adidas hoodie jacket on and a visible sideline pass.

I have grabbed a couple of video shots and put them in chronological order to explain what I think happened. I have also added the video (which does not show everything in order) so you can judge for yourself.

Edit: I agree with T9 that the "Dude" is Chris Allen, one of the S&C coaches. Now why he was pulling on Stewart's facemask is a question I would like to have answered.

1) Charles Stewart and the "Dude" argue while Ohio State is in the huddle. The "Dude" has his hand on Stewart's facemask and is pulling it.

2) There are already 11 men on the field when Stewart frees his facemask from the "Dude" and starts to run on the field

3) Defensive backs Coach Tony Gibson pulls Stewart off, then calls timeout. Defense team rolls to the sideline.

4) Coach Gibson yells at the "Dude" (guy in the adidas hoodie with the red arrow pointing at him). I have circled in red his sideline pass. RR stares him down. Barwis is pissed.

5) Stewart yells at the "Dude" again during the timeout. Barwis is still pissed.

6) The "Dude" stands quietly during the timeout. Again, I have no idea who this guy is or what he is doing on the sideline. I don't know why he and Stewart were fighting. He is not a member of the Michigan coaching staff as far as I can tell. If anyone knows who he is, please share.

7) Coach Gibson yells something to Mike Barwis. If I had to guess, it was something to the effect of "get that idiot out of here". Barwis nods his head. Someone should figure out if the "Dude" is still alive and/or arrange for his remains to be transported from Columbus.

Edit: We have gotten many (like almost 8,000) hits on this post over the last 36 hours. Several Ohio State and Michigan State boards have linked. Welcome to our horror show guys. Yes, it is clear to me that Barwis yells something back at Gibson, but the way that he nods his head and goes to the now identified Chris Allen -- indicates to me that he is going to take him away. You can read anything you want into the drama that is Michigan football these days. Keep in mind, Barwis and Gibson have worked together for years, I have no doubt Barwis dropped an F-Bomb (I did the same thing) but I also don't believe this was a battle between S&C and the position coaches.

Here is the video. Keep in mind, the fight between Stewart and the "Dude" is not shown until the end. Brian's Dad incorrectly states that it is a battle between the players and coaches.

I think it is important to note, this event did not have any effect on the game. Michigan's defense was playing with passion and speed early on. They were stopping the Buckeyes. It was not until they got worn out (a quarter and half of 3 and outs by your offense will do that) that Ohio State started scoring.

Sru your ignorance is showing. Or do you still think you won a Big Ten championship this year?

i bet you $100 that if we went to the big ten's official website and looked up the 2008 Big Ten Champions, it would show Ohio State

put your money and your ignorance where your mouth is

Here's what I see...
The Dude and Stewart are jawing about something such that Stewart misses the call to get on the field. He manages to get free but is too late, and so the timeout needs to be called.
Then somehow Barwis starts flinging F-bombs at the players.
It makes no sense that Barwis is involved in it....unless the dude is one of his S & C guys???

Here's my two cents:
The Dude may be Chris Allen of the S&C staff....

I think it would be Penn State that won the "lions" share of this years co-championship. And yes, sru, the Wolverines have shared many of their 42 with others, including tosu. I am not sure how to get to a single champion each year under the current system but am not an advocate of splitting the Big Ten into divisions to have a playoff. This would totally mess up the Michgan-tosu game each year and would suck. I am for leaving it alone and if there has to be co-champions than that is how it's gonna be.

@Bigasshamm

If co-championships don't count when was the last time Michigan won a National Championship? Surely if a conference co-championship doesn't count, a national co-championship doesn't.

Wow, thanks Andy, your explanation makes good sense. From what I read, the team loves RR and his staff and although it appeared during the game that there was some disrespect or animosity on the sidelines, I am thankful that you were able to put some perspective on this that shows something much different than the TV announcers thought.

Andy said...

All the conversation about co-championships is silly. Ohio State will get rings just like Penn State. That is why Bo was always focused on getting to the Rose Bowl - as it is the real tie breaker.

T9, I believe that you are right about Chris Allen. It makes more sense now why Barwis was so involved. I typically only see his on the sidelines firing people up, not acting as law enforcement.

srudoff said...

actually the rose bowl isn't always the real tie breaker - if two teams tie that haven't faced each other during the season, the team that's gone the longest without going to the rose bowl gets to go

we need another team and two divisions

I 100% agree on this with you. I would love to see another team from Ohio (Miami or Cincinnati) or another team from Pennsylvania (Pitt) get added to the conference.

any comments about stewart smacking away rich rod's hand at the 0:17 mark of the video???

My only comment is that Charles Stewart is a 5th year senior. He has never beaten Ohio State. Technically, as of yesterday he is no longer a member of the Michigan football team.

How's that ?

Catie said...

Oye, that that does not sound so good. It saddens me to think that it really was a conflict on the sidelines. Do we know if he quit the team or did the coaches give him the boot?

Andy said...

No Catie.

His career is over. There are no more games for him.

That whole Occam's Razor concept has left the building for me tonight.....sorry! Thanks for clarifying something that was basically simple.

I feel sorry for the buckeye seniors that could have been millionaires, they returned for this. NO NC, No Rose Bowl. But out the two atleast OSU did better than they did last year. Co-champs is better than getting pasted in the NC title game, I think. That is what always being overrated will get ya. Love SC, Hate OSU.

Barring the scheduling nightmares it would create because of their "commitments" it has always been assumed that ND would be perfect for the Big Ten. It will never happen due to their commitment to the NDBC and their rivalries with Navy and USC. Basiclly they would only have 1 open non conference game and that just wouldn't work. As for who the other BT team could be I really don't know. Cinci is meh. Miami of OH is good for a MAC school but I just don't ever see them carrying the numbers you need for the BT. Remember this isn't just for football. Definitely though the BT has needed another school and a championship game for years. It would also help relegate the 50 day layover that's possible for BT teams going to BCS bowl games. Ridiculous.

Andy said...

Notre Dame is never going to be a B10 member. They have no reason to join. Currently they get the benefit of playing the B10 teams they want without having to deal with the conference.

Academically Miami is a good fit. THey would struggle with the athletic competition as Northwestern does.

Cincy could compete with the additional exposure.

I would prefer another team from Ohio to eventually give the Bucks some in-state competition for recruits and fans.

For years I have said Pitt is a logical choice; because it would re-ignite the Pitt/Penn State rivalry bring the entire state into the B10 fold.

ohio_guy said...

how about West by God Virginia?

anyway, if it does go to 12 teams and 2 divisions, that would mean 2 things.

1. OSU and UM would have to be in the same division, to prevent rematches, cause that would be weird as fuck. the divisions would probably be separated by west (wisc, minn, nw, illini, iowa, purdue) and east (the rest of us and the new school)

2. do we still call ourselves the "big ten"? or not, what do we call it? btw, the official name of the big ten is the "Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives"

ohio_guy said...

oh, and the city of Columbus has its first professional sports title.

MLS Cup: Columbus 3, New York 1

srudoff said...

Toledo for the 12th team? ;)

I think Iowa St, Louisville, Pitt or Cincy would work best besides ND

I really wish Big Ten schools would tell ND to get lost until they join the conference. Too bad you guys re-upped for so long :(

Funny how that guy feels so bad for buckeye seniors - think they'd rather switch places with Michigan seniors? Lost to a MAC school, most losses in history, most home losses in history, bowl streak is over, and never beat OSU in their careers at Michigan.

Besides each of the Buckeye seniors that you feel sorry about because they could have been millionaires will still be millionaires next April, with the lone exception of Boeckman.

Michigan fans would argue that Columbus' first professional sports title came in the fiesta bowl against Miami :)

You beat me to it. Congrats to all you die-hard MLS fans in columbus.

WV wouldn't work in the B10. We can only afford to have one totally insane self absorbed fan base in this conference.

@eastindyguy

Check the votes... we would have been awarded soul posession of the '97 title. We had a significantly larger percentage of the votes... Osborne got the split as a retirement going away present. They're lesser percentage was due to a close 27-24victory over Col. and that game saving miracle @ Mizzou that preserved their undefeated season.

Concerning Big 10 alignment,
It wouldn't be east to west simply because you could never get the presidents of the would be east to sign off on it. Penn State could not go in with Mich and Tuos as that would put the power three in together and leave a weak west as the conf. title game fodder. The big three would hate to have to infight for the right to face an inferior west division winner every year in football, the biggest revenue generating sport by far.

As much as I would like it to make geographical sense like the Big 12 or SEC my guess is it would end up like the ACC whose past rivalries, and traditional powers needed to be assuaged and respected to allow the expansion. Remember FSU dominated the ACC every year, that is why both VA Tech and Miami (former Big East powers) ended up in the same division, so they would have to face each other every year while FSU should've remained the staple in the Atlantic division (I really have no idea if they are Atlantic or Coastal... like I said it's not geographically logical). The ACC is for basketball anyway. They're brand of football is so weak.

If another team is added, for marketing/revenue, tradition, academics, future potential, and stealability you have to consider local options. You'll never convince NOtre SHAME. Iowa State is like a NW w/out the academics only they are already in a 12 team BCS conference. What's in it for them, and besides they're actually worse athletically than NW in sports. Their marketing is non-existant as their rivalry with Iowa is already played out to the fullest; that's not worth a 12th team to our conference. Cincy would be better than IA State, but even they are sorely lacking in the tradition department. It just doesn't seem like the best we could do in the tradition steeped Big 10. They don't have a traditional niche that they could exploit to be awarded the sole offer. Louisville is alright, but they don't have BIG time money or the lucrative potential to be had. They are good but not great. WV is better, and for a while would create a grudge match with Mich. They like Louisville also do well in basketball and are steeped in their own po-dunk tradition. Syracuse has to be even better as they bring some of the NY market (very valuable) and is a choice worthy of lengthy discussion just for that. On the downside it expands the Big 10 so far east and that is important (remember the state of Penn is new since '94 to the conference). The conference looses some of its roots, not to mention that a realignment already FUBARs it anyway. I just see Syracuse as aggressive expansion rather than a solidifying staple like the tradition and roots based Big 10 is. Not the best fit. A MAC team is out of the question with the better Big East teams with better money up for grabs.

When all things are considered, Pitt brings a bigger market (the city of Pittsburgh, and a strengthened western PA/WVA market), great academics, outstanding tradition and athletics (Tony Dorsett and Dan Marino) with a great basketball team, a solid football base, and a rivalry ready to be reignited with Penn State. They're program's infrastructure is very solid and is a safe and logical winning bet for the Big 10. They are stealable as I would rate all Big East teams, and as far as potential goes, with some success that should come as a program invigorating benefit of joining the Big 10 (boosters would cough up money with excitement) they will be able to correct their only obvious deficiency at this moment in time... their own football stadium. Overall I just think that while this is an expansion, grabbing a traditional team from within our geographical kingdom and with legitimate prestige would help to ease the transition and dissention that would naturally come from this. Other than ND (and F*ck ND) Pitt has to seem the best choice over Syracuse and WV by two horse lengths or so.

Divisional alignment might go like this to keep in place some balance, market equivalency, and old rivalries

Lakes Division:
Michigan - Mich State - OSU - Purdue - Indiana - NW

Plains Division:
Penn State - Pitt - Iowa - Minny - Wisky - Illinois

For the record, I'm not a fan of realigment now, and in the current economic downturn, I don't think its time to think about expansion of operations anyway. I also don't think the Big 10 brass would be in favor of it ever until the time comes when there is a playoff system in place of the BCS anyway. Right now it is too easy to run the table and sneak a team into the title game without unnecessarily risking a Conf. title game. To alleviate the 50 day bowl layoff the Big 10 needs to add a bye week to the schedule. Other conferences have it and we won't do it right now. That should be a simple fix. That would also be a necessary step for a playoff system to emerge on the national stage.

Thats a really long analysis.

Rutgers is by far the best fit for entrance to the Big Ten than any other Big East school.

It offers:
Academics,
is a public school,
a large student body (and alumni base),
a program that is not totally at the bottom (anymore - like Syracuse currently is),
high TV ratings,
and its own stadium, that is being expanded.

If 12 games per season is going to be norm. I'd rather see the Big 10 teams ditch 2 of the non-conference games and then play 10 games in coference and they would get to play each other. Or ditch one of the 11 and then play 9 games against each other.
