"Only three things can happen to you when you pass, and two of them are bad." ~ Woody Hayes
On Monday, December 15th 2008 (at 3PM CST) ESPN Classic is going to replay the he 1978 Gator Bowl. Most of you will ask: Who cares ? ESPN Classic shows old football games all the time.
But this is a special game (originally played on December 29, 1978) featuring THE Ohio State Buckeyes and the Clemson Tigers. This would be legendary Buckeye Coach Woody Hayes' last game on the sidelines.
It was not that interesting of a contest until a point with a few seconds remaining in the game, trailing 17-15 but moving to score, Ohio State QB Art Schlichter threw a pass that sailed wide
and was intercepted by Clemson player Charlie Bauman. He gets pushed out of bounds. Bauman's teammates cluster around him on the Ohio State sideline -- doing all the congratulatory things football players do. Then so suddenly that TV cameras didn't pick it up clearly, a white-haired man wearing a jacket and baseball cap charges into the midst of the melee and throws a right-hand sucker punch that lands on Bauman's collarbone. Woody Hayes punched Bauman.
Chaos erupted. Ohio State lost the game. Woody is asked by OSU to retire. He refuses. By the time the team returns home the next day, Woody Hayes has been fired by the school he made legendary. At the Columbus airport, police escort him from the plane to a car waiting on the tarmac, and he is driven off -- to his house and into retirement. He never apologized."I don't say that anymore. I found out four things can happen on a forward pass. The fourth is that you can get fired."
~ Woody Hayes

the first tosu -michigan game that i remember was 1969 (i was 6). counting that, Michigan is 20-18-2. of the 20 wins, i can recall one instance after which Michigan fans printed up tees to celebrate (2003- the 100th game).
i guess that says a lot about who is obsessed w/ whom.
Between sparty and tuos, it has been quite a year for t-shirts...
I may have to create my own.
sic, when was the first time you saw a t-shirt celebrating an OSU win over UM?
Andy,
that sounds like a photo shop project- can't wait to see it.
OG,
i moved to Columbus in 1990, so i wouldn't have likely seen any before then even if they existed.
1998 is probably the first year i recall (granted, there weren't a lot of opportunities in the 90's before that).
since then, i think i've seen some sort of "gold pants" themed tee every year tosu has won.
BTW- we don't give the players little key chain trinkets when we beat tosu, either. sort of like the tee shirt thing.

Hmmmm. Maybe you should start. The trinket has to be more motivating than chocolate milk.
Whets said "Well, someone needed to hit him."
ROFLMAO

Who to root for? Hmmmm.
Actually, Shorty, the correct response if one is keeping to the genre would be: "...except among friends."
maybe the buckeye corner should start making up tee shirts for this stuff-

since this is the third of the season, we could call it a "buckeye hat trick"???
SiC,
You're just jealous your boys can't multi-task.
