Tulsa over Michigan ???

{Shaking my head slowly}

Shavodrick Beaver decided to attend Tulsa instead of Michigan. WTF ? I hate college football recruiting.

Never again will I mention the name of a "verbal" commitment before National Signing Day. It just is not worth it.

We need some serious Snake Oil Sales Magic in the 73 days.

The good news is there is plenty of time left and there are plenty of dual threat QBs we can target.

The bad news is we continue to get punched in the gut by the verbal commit/decommit process.

This is a perfect example of how you and my wife are similar.

Your post was better.

I sense state-wide therapy coming into vogue.

a crap...I pulled it.
no worries.

I've been thinking. Dangerous, I know. But this whole rivals.com/recruiting watch stuff is inconsistent with reality. And is seeming more and more pointless.
Do we SERIOUSLY believe that 17 year old boys can 'commit' early in their senior year (or before)?

I mean, hell...they can't even commit to a girlfriend, or to what time they'll be home, or to doing their homework, or cleaning their room. Like they are really gonna pick one school and stick with it???

Here's my bet. There is a simple answer to why someone would choose TULSA for gosh's sake over Michigan Football. It can only be one thing....Beaver's beaver is going to Tulsa and so is he.....

(sorry for being so crass)

I think he is going to Tulsa because his Momma told him he needs to stay closer to home.

My last job in the Marine Corps was in the recruiting business. I have 1st hand knowledge of the mind of an 18 year old when faced with a serious decision. I can't count the number of kids that backed out at the last minute for all kinds of funky reasons. No matter what they tell you one day, they are always capable of changing their mind at the last minute.

I think you all are not giving Tulsa its due. Their program is moving upward. Michigan, well, as you know there are a few issues that need to be ironed out.

You may be right about momma, et al, but Tulsa may not be a bad choice. The next few years will tell the tale.

I thought someone needed to state the obvious.

Andy,
You were a Marine Corps recruiter?!?! YOU GO TO HELL YOU SICK BASTARD!!!! Dante forgot to mention that there's an extra layer in the deepest depths of hell reserved for recruiters like you!!!

Haha!!! Just kidding, I knew you were a recruiting officer (in Buffalo you mentioned), and I also knew what I was getting into, and I don't regret one bit of it.

I also know what you mean about backing out. My brother's best friend did (and then went ROTC to the Army), and I served on recruiters assistance and I saw it all. It amazed me how so many people were afraid to step out of their comfort zone to try to change their lives for the better. They weren't happy with their lives, but were too afraid to abandon the status quo for drastic change that could be for the better, or worse. They didn't like bagging groceries at Wal-Mart, but sometimes taking that leap is pretty hard... it wasn't the easiest thing for me in the beginning. All kinds of excuses are made to justify the fear of the unknown... and that's what it is. Life is about what you do when your faced with the big challenges/decisions. Andy, you know from personal experience as well that that's why we ended up Marines and why some people joined the Army.

As for Beaver and football players I think it is more than just that fear of taking the plunge. I think he personally felt that he had a better chance of starting for more of his career at Tulsa and didn't want to risk being a backup for too long at Michigan. It is the fear of failure at the big time school that convinced him to go a safer route and have a better chance of succeeding (on a smaller stage albeit) at a C-USA school.

I'm not going to hate on him, it's his choice, but I don't think we wanted someone who couldn't handle the expectation of succeeding at Michigan before he even got there anyway. Winners want the ball, they don't shy away from the bright lights.

He said it was more about personal development as a person and all that stuff. That just sounds like Justin Boren gibberish to me. I think it was just plain fear itself that scared him.

This is all just my personal insight, but that is the only serious explanation I can come up with that makes half a cent besides the one where Tulsa paid his high school coach six figures to swing him their way.

T9, I may not have been able to commit to any of those things you noted at 18, but I know I could've committed to one school had they offered me a scholarship... alas, I am still a free agent!

Winning is an attitude and Michigan needs more of those people... it's been a while for sure.

Well, I really wasn't a recruiter per say. I was the Ops Officer that made sure they shipped to Parris Island on time without any issues. I learned some valuable skills and life lessons during that time.

And yes... I agree that Marine Recruiters have a special place in hell. Slightly above Drill Instructors, but hell none-the-less.

Lloyd never had this problem!

Because Lloyd never tried to recruit 2 good QBs @ same time. This is going to happen when you recruit multiple blue chips @ the same position.

And Whets- you say Tulsa may be a better option? Like saying UC is more of an up & comer than the other BCS school in Ohio.

I wonder what will happen to the "I root for Shav'd Beaver" t-shirts that were on sale over at mgoblog's "mgostore?"

wv=dsylsnach, unreal...

Actually with the Shav'd Beaver going to Tulsa, it opens up a spot for A.J. Westendorf from Holland Christian here in the 616.

He lead HC to an undefeated season and state title. He also played linebacker. Heard Rival's Josh Hemholt on sports talk radio say that Coach Rod wouldn't offer him a scholarship, because of the 2 commits and wanted him to be a prefered walk-on. But now with only 1 QB committment, that could change. He has a 4.0 GPA and scored high on his ACT that he could easily get academic scholarships. I heard he is interested in Michigan for its academics. Not sure if any clips of the state title game are still on any of the tv stations here in the 616, but if you want to dig around check out woodtv.com (NBC), wxmi.com (FOX), wwmt.com (CBS)and wzzm13.com (ABC). If clips are still posted, you WILL be impressed!

SiC,

You are part of the kool-aid brigade. Nothing wrong with that, but you are going to have a much different view than outside observers.

I'm not picking or trying to be mean--just helpful in the current discussion.

You all need to circle the wagons and keep the rest of the fan-base in positive spirits. That's what true fans do. All I'm saying is that from the outside Michigan isn't as attractive as it used to be.

You've got high school kids who want to improve their NFL draft possibilities. There is mucho pressure on them to get the best positive exposure possible. Despite your great history of putting guys in the pros "right now" outsiders see UM as a potential liability. No one “knows” if RR can pull you out of the tailspin. Hope is fine, for true blue fans, but for guys gambling with their future it looks like a crap-shoot...from the outside.

Notice, I'm not saying you won't get recruits, I'm saying the bloom is off the rose for the moment and calling it something else doesn't change reality.

That's my theory and I'm stickin' to it.

Regarding UC & that other BCS school--it's not a zero-sum game. Both are doing well and it shows in their recruiting. Just sayin'.

wv = ampethon (amp-e-thon). I guess that means things are going to heat up.

Are you kidding?!?! I know there are a few bad eggs, but I LOVE Drill Instructors!!! They are some of the most hilarious people you will ever meet. You can never tell all of your fond memories that they so lovingly spawned. Ask my father, one of my personal philosophies is that everybody would be at least a little more productive if they had a Drill Instructor. I also feel that that would have cured the softness that plagued the last years of L2's tenure. If only the football team had a few good men to keep them hard during practice. Recruiters is a whole different ball game.

Sic,
Lloyd is a hypocritical F-face. I learned some inside stuff on him and the Les Miles debacle. Safe to say he broke it to ESPN before the SEC title game to force Les to publicly denounce the M job, because he didn't want him coming here for personal reasons... and this was his last desperate measure in defiance of everyone else involved, despite the approval of the Michigan board of trustees, Bill Martin, and Les and his agent who had a general outline for a secret contract already drawn up.

F*ck Lloyd Carr and his 'good guy, integrity first' image. Anyone who does something like that, knifing the efforts of something many people worked hard to get done in the best interest of the one thing all parties profess to love, is nothing short of betrayal. He not only knifed Les, he chose personal vindication over one thing he professes to love. That just tells me he cares more about his legacy and himself than Michigan.

I can at least respect an evil person for their commitment to representing their side publicly... but the one thing I've never been able to stand is one person who professes to represent and embody good honest values, but really is just a poser... usually out for self interest. It's why I have a lot of respect for Woody and Bo in a serious way, and why I'm suspicious of Tressel who smells like a snake, and Lloyd who is one.

Oh, and to follow up on my first post, if you read the interview of Ricardo Miller on MGoBlog, it turns out that my suspicions seem to have been correct. Ricardo states that Beaver seemed overwhelmed (in a not seemingly good way) by our crowd when he visited. Just got scared of the big time, and yes Whets I agree with you about the rose bloom at the moment, though I think for this particular decommitment it was fear that motivated the move to Tulsa, not Michigan's current state.

Shorty,

I'll have to go with your take on The Beav. You know more about him than I do.

Admittedly, my theory is a broad brush approach.

SiC,

You just proved my point. Which is it, raspberry or grape?

Sic,
My bad, I couldn't tell. I see that stuff about how people love and cherish Lloyd and that just ticks me off. Though with your point about dual position recruiting I knew you weren't THAT type. Just clarifying you know, I was drinking the kool aid.
