Mr. Millen, with his inexperience and ineptitude, completely wrecks a football franchise---and then gets to go back to TV analysis from whence he came???? W. T. F.
Normally, I can't stand Drew Sharp--but today he got it right. How Matt Millen can even show his face on TV right now is beyond me. Seriously man, HAVE YOU NO SHAME??? NO REMORSE???? Consider all of the players and coaches AND THEIR FAMILIES that you've affected---not in a good way either. And NBC is pathetic too.
Here's a head scratcher: which is worse---being arrested for DUI while trying to get home for some hot sex or completely destroying the reputation and the organization of a foundational football team? One of these folks won't be on the air, but the other is...talking about football. MINDNUMBING.

There's a great article I read once about how the incompetent lack the skills to recognize competancy. This leads to their own supreme confidence, even in the face of profound failure. I'm quite sure Millen firmly believes he was just a victim of circumstance. In short, he has no idea what you're talking about.
ironically, this is how he got the job in the first place.
millen had never been anything but a player and an analyst, but he was a pretty good analyst. from what i remember, he was one of the better talking heads at the time.
Bill Sr. thought he was so good that he hired him to be GM, w/ no experience, because of what he said as an analyst on TV.
to follow up on Jim's point, most people fail to recognize their own incompetence (Carlin had a great schtick on self awareness entitled something like: "you ever notice how you are the only one driving the correct speed on the highway?").
it's the basis for Dilbert & the "peter principle". how many people ever walk into their boss' office and say: "i'm not competent at my job. you need to demote me"?? Millen certainly isn't any different. he's just more prominent.
let's just be glad he's back on TV and not still at Ford Field.
and let's hope Sr doesn't watch him on TV, like what he hears, and decides to give him another shot!?!?!
I don't hold much animosity to Millen. He was given a golden opportunity and failed.
I blame Ford Sr.
He is the person that let this ship ram into the iceberg then allowed his captain to turn it around and ram it again and again.
i don't blame you - i blame the man that hired you
seems apropos here
Hook'em Horns!
Actually Barkley wasn't on his way home for hot sex, he was on his way to proposition a woman in an alley who had given him the best head of his life the week before.
Seriously though, Barkley's just upholding the reputation of the NBA... he'll be back on the air again before the season is over.
As for Millen, I agree and I wonder if he has any shame or if any of these coaches and execs who fail and then go into broadcasting have any, but to be honest he wasn't that bad on the NBC telecast paired with that disjointed, misused rabble.
It was either Wilbon or Whitlock who wrote a good article on Patrick and Olbermann telling too many inside jokes on the air, Olbermann is currently too political to be on Sunday Night Football, and the Bus isn't special, and Collinsworth is the only great one for that specific venue. I agree. If NBC must throw a mix of all their high priced gems into the broadcast, then I think Millen fits that no direction crowd. I'm just glad he's not on FOX or ESPN to ruin the two best (and the only two worth a damn) football coverage teams. Seriously, you can't go wrong with Boom and TJ, and that FOX gang is just great... they sound like football should sound.
"Here's a head scratcher: which is worse---being arrested for DUI while trying to get home for some hot sex or completely destroying the reputation and the organization of a foundational football team?"
Uh....being arrested for DUI? That is the right answer, isn't it? Being a bad GM never killed anyone.
Dex,
I completely agree with you 100%. It is worth mentioning that Barkley does have the good sense/judgment to understand when he was completely in the wrong and to point out exactly what that was without putting an ounce of blame on anyone else (like the cops who arrested him). Whereas Millen's judgment and perception of the matter is much more in line with what Jim was talking about.
Despite all his faults, you can still appreciate Charles Barkley and all his better qualities in a big way. Millen, not so much. I would like to go on the record that I like Rod Marinelli and think he could be a successful HC one day in a not so defunct organization... not that he'll ever get the chance again.
On the bright side for this year's Lions rookies, it can be safely assumed that no rookie (soon to be sophomore) ever enjoyed their first NFL victory quite as much as them. That will be quite a savory moment.
Speaking of savory moments... F*ck conference loyalty/concern over reputation, Hook'em Horns big time. I hope UT takes a page out of Taggert's playbook in Blazing Saddles and gives OSU the ol' number six!
dex--thanks for contributing! your point is well-taken. I guess I got distracted by the notion of Charles Barkley naked during sex......
Barkley >>>>> unicorns????
I'm just glad I didn't have a brick nearby because my nice newish plasma TV would have had it go through it.
T9,
FWIW- Mike & Mike on ESPN Radio this a.m., discussing the very same topic. their point is, how much credibility can Millen have as an analyst now? he talks a good game, but he's the former GM of the worst team of the decade. what's he really know about football?
w/ Drew Sharp, ESPN, and you lined up against him, he's doomed.
