When I was a kid, my mom and I would go shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue and Hudson's Downtown. My Grandfather would take me to Boblo Island every summer. In the winter we all'd go to the Auto Show and dream. In college, we'd make ROAD TRIPs to Lafayette Coney Island and as freshmen we went nuts when the Tigers won the World Series. It's been pretty tough around here of late--and while we've been the butt of too many jokes, jeers, and self-righteous judgment...we stay. And we believe. In this week's SI, Mitch Albom explains why we love this city and our teams. And why all you haters can shove it.
Bless you Mitch

Never been to the auto show. Need to make it up for that sometime.
Spent new years eve downtown at the Fox Theatre to see the Barenaked Ladies. Great experience, and downtown Detroit was buzzing that night.
I also work with a guy who used to work on the Boblo boats in the summer. They need to bring those back!
Detroit will come back. Believe!
Good article.
I definitely want to visit Detroit one day as it is similar to my favorite city Pittsburgh.
If there's life after steel in Pittsburgh, then there's hope for Detroit.
T9,
wasnt it that bookstore owner, Emily Gail(?), the one who had tv commericals which ended "say nice things about Detroit."?
she was a granola type, had to braided ponytails, and her brother was one of the actors on the sitcom, "Barney Miller."
Wow. That was great. Say what you will about Mitch, he knows how to put words down on paper to make a point.
I grew up up on the west side of the state (the part that used to be 616) -- so chicago was our major media connection. It wasn't until I went to Ann Arbor that I spent any time in Detroit.
It took a while, but it has grown on me. I now believe that things will get better in time. Something new and exciting will spark the city back to life.
Mitch Albom has been one of my favorite writers ever since he arrived in Detroit. I have lived in the Detroit area all my life and worked downtown for many years. I live about halfway between Detroit and Ann Arbor and love this entire area. I remember taking the bus with my Grandma from her house on the west side to Hudson's downtown to shop. We cannot give up on this city and I know that it will eventually come back.
Mitch used to be one of my favorite writers when he was a young buck for the Free Press but when he started to branch out from sports, he lost his edge. This article made me remember why I used to like him.
616--
right you are about Emily and her pony tails.
I actually tried to find her or an image of her T-shirt for this post but no dice.
She is the one who coined "say nice things about Detroit"
see, this is why I like you guys so much. you 'get' the random cultural references. most others just smile politely at me and nod......
One of my earliest memories is going to a Tigers game and seeing Lance Parish hitting a game winning home run.
Hopefully Detroit will return to her glory days.
Go Blue
T9,
smile and nod?
it's more like the following: some people watch "The Incredibles" on DVD and are entertained. others say "what great acting!" then there are some that are amazed at how improved the animation in Pixar movies since "The Incredibles" was made.
