Remember that April 3rd night in Seattle??? Where were you when sophomore guard, Rumeal Robinson, stepped to the line with 0:03 ticks left on the clock?#3 seed Michigan down 78-79 to the #3 seed Seton Hall Pirates in overtime????
Rumeal bounces the ball. Eyes the basket, bends his knees----SWOOSH>>>> tie game.
He backs away from the line, bounces, readies, shoots.......
SWOOSH
MICHIGAN WINS 80-79 !!!!!!
No one can forget the drama leading up to that final tournament win
Michigan went into the 1989 tournament 30-7 overall and 12-6 in the Big Ten
Conference. Prior to the tourney, then coach Bill Frieder announces that he will be leaving Michigan at the end of the season to coach at Arizona State University. Bo Schembechler, then AD, fired Frieder and pronounced "A Michigan Man is going to coach a Michigan team" and elevated assistant Steve Fisher as interim head coach. The team responded with tournament wins over Xavier, South Alabama, North Carolina in the Sweet 16, Virginia in the Elite 8, and a fantastic Final Four 83-81 victory (FINALLY!) over the Illini. THAT was a crazy night. People poured into the streets (myself included) and clogged South U.--until Ann Arbor's finest came and hosed us away. Literally.....Next up Seton Hall. And the win in OT. Glen Rice named tournament MOP for his tournament record 184 points.
Demetrius Calip (#13, Guard)Michael Griffin (#20, Forward)
Sean Higgins (#24, Forward)
Mark Hughes (#55, Center, Captain)
Marc Koenig (#30, Guard)
Terry Mills (#52, Forward)
Glen Rice (#41, Forward, Captain, jersey honored, All-American)
Eric Riley (#42, Center)
Rumeal Robinson (#21, Guard, All-American)
Loy Vaught (#35, Center)
and don't forget Rob (pachenko) Palinka, J.P OOOOOOOSterbaan, Chris Seter, and James Voskuil
Fast forward 20 years because most will be in attendance at Saturday night's game against tUOS as the Wolverines celebrate that magical season (must have pdf file!).
According to mgoblue.com "In honor of the national championship team, the 2008-09 Wolverines will wear dark blue replica 1989 uniforms furnished by adidas for the national championship 20-year anniversary. The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned to the public starting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 20. T9,
Are we old or what? I vividly remember that night, watching the game on a big screen TV with 50 of my fraternity brothers in the 616 (now 269.) The guys who were sparty fans were rooting for the maize and blue, amazed that they were doing it. The guys from the Chicago were still stunned from their loss to Glen Rice and company in the final 4. The place went NUTS after each of those made free throws by Rumeal "meal ticket" Robinson! Calmer heads did prevail, as tempting as it was to drive 90 mins to A2 never happened once tv coverage showed the maddness, we changed our minds.
Here is a quest for Spawn Nation. Someone find the ESPN tv commercial with Chris Farley imitating Rumeal Robinson and he kept missing. It was sometime in the early 90s.
Very cool post T9.
I watched from a bar stool at the Officer's Club at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton. I was a very young 2nd LT. It was less than a year since graduation. I grunted through many shots of celebration tequilla that night with my buddies after Rumeal sank those free throws.
Shocking news....
Morgan Trent just got beat for a touchdown in the East West Shrine Game. Wow, who could have predicted that ?
Also, Morgan decides to cover his "winged michigan" helmet with stickers from other teams. Idiot.
Morgan Trent had a nice INT earlier. Don't like the stickers on the helmet though. From what I have seen, no other Big Ten player put any stickers. Let's just hope the East can pull it out.
BTW, Glen Rice was always my favorite NBA player because of his three-point shooting, Michigan, and the Charlotte Hornets who, unfortunately, moved to New Orleans.
The Cavs just whooped on that Charlotte (NO) Hornets (Bucs? throwback jerseys?) ass last night. It ws fun watching half the Hornets (Bucs?) get thrown out near the end of the game. Try and act like professionals. Seriously you're making millions of dollars to do jack shit.
Michigan takes their first lead 324-32 with ~13 minutes left
I meant 34-32
Michigan has a 44-40 lead with 7:52 left.
This is a very exciting game.
I LOVE the old school jerseys. The look great, even if their shorts are too big.
Bucks getting all the bouces right now.
They lead 51-47 3:33 left
was that a "fuck ohio" chant I just heard?
Michigan had a 6 point lead with 8+ minutes left. Ohio State turned on the press - and we could not control the ball.
BJ Mullens is my new least favorite player in basketball.
Nice win Buckeyes
was that a "fuck ohio" chant I just heard?
No, you must have heard me screaming all the way from austin.
Oh well. That sucks. Way too many easy Buckeye dunks.
Michgan did not shoot the ball well today. That is a problem with a team that shoots over 50% of their shots from behind the 3 point line.
Wtf was with that first half and them launching 3 pointers from my house? They have absolutely no inside game. Honestly I don't know how they beat Duke.
Side note have they lost every game while they've been ranked?
Hockey team won 1-0 at Bowling Green tonight.
Split the weekend series with the Falcons.
Matta and Tressel 15-2 vs Michigan...
As I was looking at the recent posts and comments this morning I noted that Spawn is getting close to 100,000 hits on the counter. The actual number this morning was 91,924 which got me thinking. While these are unofficial results, it feels to me that Strudoff has posted about 80,000 of these and included either a notation of Tre$$els record against Michigan (adding Matta just now)or that Michigan lost to Toledo. We appreciate your contribution and the originality of your comments.
wv = vericick (not kidding, appropriate for a comment about Stru.......)
GoBlueBob--
good one!
I too have been eyeing the ticker and really can't believe that we are approaching 100 K.
Pretty humbling, and a bit scary as well.
Humbling because this is just a hobby. A way for Andy and I to continue to bloviate about Michigan football (and other things) together. And a way to keep Yost's community together.
Scary because of how many 'eyes' drop by here and see what we all have to say. And how many of them come from places OTHER than the midwest. Amazing.
the world really is flat.
actually i rarely mention tressel's record against you - don't have to - it's just out there with everyone knowing about it - it's like having a friend that has cancer (not the rrod kind, the disease kind) - you both know that it's out there but neither one mentions it.
and i only mention toledo because i'm trying to be kind and not bring up appy state.
The world is flat (especially parts of ohio), but we have already discussed that late last year. I also was is such a rush when I posted my earlier comment that I misspelled srudoff and added an extra "t". I keep getting him mixed up with beef stroganoff I guess. I guess I should just remember that there is never much "meat" to his comments and that will keep me away from the beef part of beef stroganoff. :>})
wv = maltsian ..... sounds like a description of beer....
80,001 and counting
congrats on getting close to 100k.
In other news, a blog started on November 3, 2008 by a walk on OSU basketball player who rides the bench all game already has 339,000 hits
um not sure if you realized what you just did OG....
but you implied that a blog by a walk-on from tUOS was somehow more impressive due to it's quantity of posts in a short amount of time. right?
isn't that kinda like claiming a bigger schlong than the guy next to you at the trough?
or like trying to compare numbers of friends on Facebook?
or like trying to convince your D&D buddies that you guys really ARE cool and that you could date anyone you wanted????
I mean really OG. Like I give a rat's ass about the numbers on anyone else's blog?
although it is nice of you to contribute to the growing tally here........
apropos that you posted this article given that Rumeal pretty much implied that the whole team was paid during their time there
“You got nine pros and none of them left school early? If you’re taking care of players the right way, you understand the process to make it work. Otherwise, a player’s got to go out and look for help, it’s going to happen” like with the Martin scandal.
