Sparty Sweep

The Michigan Hockey team just finshed sweeping the season series against Michigan State at Yost, winning tonight 5-3. For the first time in the history of this heated rivalry the Wolverines went 5-0 while facing the Spartans.

Michigan took a 3-0 lead in the 1st period and never looked back against the worst MSU team I have ever seen. I am not sure what is happening in East Lansing, but their hockey program has taken a nose dive this year. On the season they are 7-16. Ouch. The announced "three stars" of the game were Matt Rust (1 goal & 1 assist), Aaron Palushaj (3 assists), and Brandon Burlon (1 goal & 1 assist).

The end of the game was marred by an ugly attack from two very frustrated players in green sweaters on Michigan's Steve Kampfer. You may recall that Kampfer was the hockey player that had his skull fractured this fall in a campus fight with a now former football player. From the replay I saw it looks like both Spartans took cheap shots. Andrew Conboy smashed Kampfer into the boards and Corey Tropp took a wrist shot swing at his head while he was on the ground. Both players were ejected and will likely face more suspensions from the CCHA. Needless to say the the Yost crowd was quite vocal on how they felt about the team in green.

Next week we get #1 ranked Notre Dame.

Edit: Greg at MVictors does a good job of breaking down the Kampfer attack using video and still shots. The Detroit Free Press also breaks it down and has quotes from both Coaches. I expect both Conboy and Tropp to miss additional games for this idiocy. This is classic old-timey NHL crap and has no place in college hockey. I hope they both miss the rest of the season.

That is pretty cool.

Anyways, a shameless plug.

If anyone knows the origins of the Law School Gargoyles, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The game last night was the first sell out of the year. That surprised me. The students were very loud all game but especially near the end when the Spartans started getting nasty. I know they are not having a good season but it was nice to go 6-0 against them this year. They are just thugs and I hope several of them get suspended for what went on last night.

I wish I was there last night.

Just a minor correction GBBob. Michigan is 5-0 against Sparty this year. We have won the last 6 we have met. This streak is the longest since a two-season run over the 1960-61 and 1961-62 campaigns -- Red Berenson's junior and senior years at Michigan.

I have added your photo blog to the links on the side of our page. I am a photographer myself, so I appreciate you sharing your views of the world.

I have recently re-started posting some of my own favorite shots on my photoblog. Obviously I don't spend as much time there as I do here.

Andy,,,, Thanks for the correction. I think I knew they were 5-0 this year but heard the 6-0 on the radio on the way in to work today (yes, I am sitting in my office on a Sunday morning trying to get caught up). Speaking of Red, he is a very classy man and it was good to see him keep his composure last night the way Sparty was acting. The MSU coach (do not remember his name) acted like a real DH all night complaing about everything that did not go his way. He was very loudly boo'd off the ice at the end of the game.

Near the end of the game when the game misconducts were called, the students started to chant very loudly, "F**k you State" over and over again. The band director, trying to cover this with some music, decided to play the "let's go Blue" music except that when it came to the "Let's go Blue" part the students just used their "F**k you State" chant instead. The band then changed to play the Victors. I thought that was hilarious. I wish the students would not use that kind of language but even I got a laugh from that.

wv = careep (in green lettes too) Must mean the MSU hockey coach.

I heard the "F*** you State..." chants loud and clear on the TV broadcast. I also caught the band trying to change the subject.

To be honest, the crowd at Yost makes me cringe. I love some of their organized cheers -- but the "R" rated stuff just makes us look bad. When my son was little it was hard to take him to enjoy a hockey game.

Thanks for that.

How do you get your pictures so that they are framed smaller anyway?

Its nice to see that we can all get over the nasty bit of blog foolishness that went down this week and celebrate a nice win.

Incidentally, it is a 5-0 season sweep and 6 wins in a row against sparty dating back to last year.

So in a round about way, GBBob and Andy are both right.

The mens basketball team had a nice win last night against NW too, with NW giving sparty a streak breaking home loss this week. It'd be nice to see UM sweep MSU at mens basketball this season. (i'm sure the calendar is circled.)

Go Blue!

I thought you were not framing your pics for "effect".

I resize the images I want to post and let blogger host them. It looks to me like you are hosting them at another URL and linking to your blog.

MSU's Tropp should not only be suspended for the remainder of the season, but also have charges pressed against him for assault with a weapon.

GO BLUE!
