Monday Runaway or Monday Maximizing.....

Well, it's official. Steven Threet is outta here. As you recall, he left Georgia Tech to come play at Michigan. And now he is leaving Michigan for parts unknown.

Apparently the signings of Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson were enough to convince Threet to transfer? Or maybe it was the realization that, um, well he can't play in this system? Or maybe this is a reflection of the uber-child culture we've created---where every kid is great, deserves the best of the best, and is entitled to find their golden ring no matter what? Is Threet's goal to play college ball with the hopes of going to the NFL? Or is Threet's goal something more sure and long-term, like say business school? or law school? or medical school? {on second thought, not so much job security in those professional industries these days either.........}

See in my shallow view of the universe, you compete and do your best. If you fall short then you learn from it and come back the next time and see what you can do differently or better. Or you realize that this may not really be your path and that other gifts await. Take, for example, Scott Loeffler. Rode the pine here at Michigan, went into coaching, ends up down in Florida coaching Tebow. Not too shabby an outcome in my naive view.

Sports is a great thing, which is why I believe that girls should start playing, competing, winning and losing at a young age. It teaches you about success, dedication, adversity, disappointment, teamwork, and provides life lessons not readily appreciated by being a book nerd or a stoner. I wonder what lessons these young men who transfer from school to school garner while they pack their baggage and carry it with them....

Most likely, it's none of my business. But it seems like a unique phenomenon in college sports these days--not necessarily specific to Michigan. But, it sure does makes me wonder just what the heck is going on over there in Schembechler.......

So, when ANY kid transfers out of whichever school you care to consider is it that they are fulfilling the promise of the free-market? Searching out their best opportunity to show off their talents and play college sports? Or is it that they a running from the difficult realities of life, not used to being told 'no' or 'you really can't do that'? Does it matter??????

This sucks because he was our only capable qb with experience.
Kids transferring is just part of the current environment. It happens. The chances of him getting a lot of playing time was getting smaller and smaller with each new mobile qb recruit.

I doubt he will go to another D1 school and sit out ANOTHER year.

Does Adrian College have a football team ?

Threet had trouble beating out Nick Sheridan at times last year. w/ Forcier in school now and Robinson coming in the fall, he could have ended up 3rd or 4th on the chart by the time season started.

yeah it sucks for the team, but kids do this all the time. we could have used Tate's older brother last year, but he transfered after Lloyd signed Mallett.

tosu has only 2 scholarship QBs in spring ball (& a 3rd coming in the fall) because Antonio Henton bolted when Pryor signed and he learned he was 4th on the depth chart.

kids don't like to sit and who can blame them?

i hope things work out for Threet @ Delaware or GVSU or where ever he lands.

I've been thinking about your questions (I had a couple of hours on an airplane today with nothing but my ipod).

Even if they are running from something, every kid deserves the right to seek out an opportunity that fits him best. If that kid is Justin Boren, Ryan Mallett, or Steven Threet. Typiclly this is done during the high school recruiting process -- but when there are coaching changes, all bets are off.

And oh yes, Adrian College does have a football team.

Go Bulldogs !!!!

T9 & Andy,
don't underestimate the "Flacco Effect". the last decade in the NFL has shown that it's more important for a QB to get playing time than where he plays his college ball. Warner, Flacco, & McNair all played at lower division schools. Roethlisberger, Hasselback, & DelHomnme, all Super Bowl QBs, all played at schools not typically considered amongst the football elite.

an offensive guard might not increase his chances by transferring, but QBs do. if Threet goes off to a FCS school and plays well, he'll get a shot at the pros that might never come sitting the bench at Michigan. can't blame him for that.

Sru, I don't think Threet was the difference between 5 and 7 wins.

Andy,

Joe Bauserman has thrown all of 6 passes since high school 5 seasons ago(spent 3 seasons in baseball before walking on @ tosu).

tosu is a Pryor knee injury from a 5 win season themselves.

Curse you, Wizard and your spells of cartilaginous doom. I counter your prophetic knee-jerk evil with the songs of OZ:

On RichRod - If I only had a brain
On Barwuss - If I only had a heart
On the Defense - If I only had the nerve

*Poof*
Be ye brainless, heartless and testoseroneless

Take that!!!

SiC:
+1 for the Flacco Effect. I hadn't considered that

I will root for Threet and McGuffie wherever they end up.
Mallett and Boren? Not so much.

Theres an actual great post about Threet at Michigan Against The World. Not a very travelled blog and hardly gets more than 5 posters but they put up a classy post about Threet thanking him for his service in a system that was totally not for him. He got the raw end of the shaft but decided to stick it out. I don't blame him in anyway and only wish he'd have waited till after next season but this is a business after all.
