Something nice and simple this week for Wallpaper Wednesday. The history of the Seal of the University of Michigan can be found at this Bentley Historical Library link.A couple of interesting things I learned while reading this:
1) There was some conflict about the actual founding year of UM. The original seals of the University had it as 1837.
2) The Lamp of Knowledge design was first introduced in 1895.
3) In 1958 the seal was changed to add "The" to the existing design.

I am glad that the "The" is on the seal but not part of the official name of the university. I would hate to have Michigan's atheletes have to be like all of the tosu atheletes who must say "The Ohio State University" whenever they are introduced. There is nothing wrong with just saying "Ohio State". I guess they need to distinguish themselves from all of the other state universities in Ohio. Wether intentional or not, it just makes them sound so arrogant. From my perspective, a simple "Michigan" says it all.
