Fun with numbers

With all the hugs, chest bumps, and numeric celebrations this week, including this billboard in downtown Detroit by a start-up web site Friends of Woody. By the way, excellent idea to drive eyeballs to your newly launched site, too bad you don't have any other content to share. Idiots.

I decided to do perform some number crunching of my own. I only pulled these from the top of my head. I would be interested to hear some additional ideas from you all. There are plenty of calendar countdown tools on the internet, I used this one.

It has been over 50,000 days since Ohio State has outranked Michigan in academic prestige. Technically this one could be set to "infinity" (), but I decided to measure it since Ohio State opened its doors in 1870.
It has been 14,419 days since Woody Hayes brought the "best team in college football history" into Ann Arbor and lost to former assistant.
It has been 11,095 days since The Ohio State University has needed to fire a coach for punching an opposing player.
It has been 6,383 days since Ohio State has had a native son return a punt for a touchdown against them and strike a Heisman pose.
It has been 3,054 days since Ohio State has fired a Hall of Fame coach with an overall winning record because he could not figure out a way to beat Michigan.
It has been 2,488 days since a former Ohio State football player has been arrested for disrupting and interfering with a flight crew causing an emergency landing of a commercial airline.
It has been 1,229 since Jim Tressel has led his team to a bowl game victory.
It has been 1,054 days since Art Schlichter has been released from prison.
It has been 1,010 days since Maurice Clarett has been in custody.

Andy,

Tosu is a good school. It has a good reputation, especially in the Mid West. However, once you leave Ohio, the only place you see their name mentioned is on the Sports Page. If not for football, they would struggle to compete w/ Miami, Case Western, and UC w/in OHIO for name recognition in academics and scholastic reputation. Forget national recognition.

So, of course they’re excited.
What else do they got?

Harvard, Yale, Princeton are supposedly good schools. I look at Washington D.C. and think--not so much.

Whoopie.

Whets is a good example. Having not attended tosu, the basis for being a fan is just what? I recall your father attended or taught there? Aside from trading the sports page, how much do you really follow the school in other areas?

Sorry. Should have been "reading", not trading. Spellck snafu

Friends of woody?
I'm friends with mine too. I've never........ and that is when I thought of some of the other posters here that I wouldn't want to offend.

It's all about the football team for me.

SiC, you have a good memory. My dad graduated from tOSU. My cousin, one of the premier neurosurgeons in the country, graduated from tOSU Medical School.

In this day and age information is available to all. In my humble opinion and "generally speaking," scholastic achievement has as much to do with the individual as it does with the school...once you get into the upper tiers.

Of course, with the cream of the crop such as MIT one gets both.

I'm curious as to how collegiate rankings are produced. I'll bet it's not as pure as one might hope.

I also believe many schools are living off past reputation.

Phil:

I am not so sure that OSU is terrified of anything right now.

One of my son's football teammates is a Buckeye commit and even he was talking trash to me the other day.

I hope that the Buckeyes keep making a big deal about all this. One of the big factors in College football is the ability to play outside your ability. It's how we get a team like Appy State coming up to the Big House and upsetting Michigan. So as the deal gets made bigger...the more fodder for this....and the chances of an upset come November.

Mik:

Haven't you already figured this out... Michigan will NEVER AGAIN beat Ohio State.
