Should the Big Ten add a 12th team and hold a post season championship game ?I posted about the need for Big Ten expansion in December. It is refreshing to see that Joe Paterno agrees with me. There are soooo many things that are right with B10 expansion. The most fundamental is the competitive advantage the other conferences get heading into the bowl season.
Joe's remarks
"We go into hiding for six weeks, Everybody else is playing playoffs on television, You never see a Big Ten team mentioned. So I think that's a handicap. I've tried to talk to the Big Ten people about, 'Let's get a 12th team -- Syracuse, Rutgers, Pitt -- we could have a little bit of a playoff.'..."

Plus it would eliminate the bitching over a non conference game that didn't matter. You could just add another conference game to the season and cut down the OOC games. I'll be old and gray before it happens though.
Personally I would rather see the Big 10 contract so that they can all play each other.
who would you kick out?
tUOS
just because ;-)
I'm afraid that if they expanded the league to 12, they would do what the Big 12 did with the Oklahoma vs. Nebraska rivalry with Michigan and Ohio State. Right now, Oklahoma and Nebraska only play each other every few years (or more if they make the championship game). Although, they would probably end up keeping the Michigan-Michigan State game every year.
As it stands right now, there are 11 teams and 12 games. If they dropped one of the non-conference games, they could play every other team. I mean, do we really need that exciting match up against EMU? (Seeing how I am an EMU alum, I like seeing the game but even I will admit there isn't much gained by either team...well except for the gate receipts for EMU...)
Although I will admit that the conference championships give those teams a bit of an advantage as it keeps them in the limelight when the final BCS results come out. It also means they have 1 more week of football so they don't have as long as layover until the bowls. However, I think we place too much stock in the Championship as it's all still too subjective....it's sort of like the East German judge.
Blah...sorry about the long diatribe.
Keep the schedule at eleven games, but have Michigan and tOSU play each other eleven times or end it when one team reaches six victories.
Let us dispose of lesser things (MSU, Penn St. et al)and just get on with it.
A championship game would be important to really declare a champion also. I'm tired of these shared championships. There is no such thing as a shared championship. They could even implement a championship game now without changing the league structure. Juts let the top two teams play each other two weeks after the final game of the season. OK maybe some years it will be MI TOSU playing twice in a row but it's not always going to be and it would really help declare the Big Ten as a national power.
It doesn't matter what the Big 10 does....everyone knows that the SEC is THE conference.....:)
Blech... SEC.
