As the resident Pens fan of this blog (ok, long time reader-infrequent poster), just wanted to say congrats to the wings and their fans. Living in this area, I know that having a winning team is so important to keep spirits up and I don't think tonight dampens that at all. The red wings (and most of their fans) are world class and I wish them all the luck in the future.
But for the fans that cheered...applauded even when Crosby got hurt: You're the sorest losers of all.
In both games that the Wings had to lose, they played like a team that was expecting the sky to open up and the Hockey Gods would hand them the Cup. Pittsburgh played like a team that wanted to win the Cup. And honestly, why didn't Babcock have Abdelkader and Leino in the lineup instead of Draper and Maltby. The couple of times I saw Maltby, he looked slow and Draper looked not much better. I'm glad for all that Maltby and Draper have done for the team over the years, but Abdelkader and Leino earned their spots with their play in games 1 and 2.
I guess I wasn't paying attention when the Wings fans cheered when Crosby went down...a pox on those fans. The same pox on the fans that cheered when Batch went down in one of the Lions games. I really don't like that kind of shit. I mean, I was glad to see Sid out of the picture but not that way.
As for the refs....I've said it enough before...I can't blame bad calls for losing or winning a game...good teams overcome that...There was alot that the Wings were getting away with too.
Anyways...with the folks waiting in the wings....the Wings will be back next year.
It was painful to watch. Hossa DID suck, NBC made me insane. I knew after game 6 that the penguins were going to win it all, I was just hoping that somehow the Wings woke up in time for game 7.
It would have been nice for those of us in Michigan, in a down turned economy, a NFL team that has sucked since the day I was born (and I am no spring chicken), and a rebuilding Michigan team, to have something to smile about today.
I was in Ann Arbor last year when the Wings won -- and yes another Stanley Cup would have been a nice shot in the arm for the state, but in reality, most people don't pay attention to the NHL.
I actually saw an "Ann Arbor is great - we have smart people that make good employees" TV ad the other day in the airport. The road to recovery is long. Michigan can be strong again, the state just can't rely on the auto industry. Need to create an environment where other types of companies are encouraged to grow and develop.
You know it's funny with all of the industries around that support the auto industry, Michigan can make a go at just about anything else. We've got excellent machinists, electronics folks, computer folks, etc.
Yes, winning the Cup would have been a nice shot in the arm...but not to be.
I didn't mean to imply that winning the cup would be something that could "change" things around in Michigan, simply just a reason to smile today! (I have other reasons to smile, so no worries ;)

I am smiling because in the USA I get ice with my drinks without asking.
