Know Your Building: Al Glick Field House

I don't know about you all, but it never ceases to amaze me when seemingly 'random' people give boatloads of money to name something. Al Glick's is the newest name to grace a building here on campus in the form of the new Al Glick Fieldhouse, a ginormous indoor practice facility where Zoltan can REALLY punt the ball.

So, I got to wondering---who is this guy and why did he donate 8.7 mil???

And, well...you shouldn't leave me alone to think because we now have a new feature here at Spawn: Know Your Building. (yeah, I'm jonesin' for football right about now)

Al Glick, 82, is the top dog at Alro Steel---a Jackson, Michigan based company founded (pun intended) in 1948. According to manta.com estimates, Alro has an annual revenue of $1,278,112,000 and employs a staff of approximately 1,500. It has locations in Michigan, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. So, yeah, I guess he and his family had some spare coin to donate.

According to the documents provided to the Regents:
"The University of Michigan (U-M) has received a leadership gift from Al Glick of Jackson, Michigan for construction of the Indoor Practice Facility for Intercollegiate Football (Field House). This new facility supplements the space available for field teams to use for practice during inclement weather. In particular, it will provide the football team with a building that meets their needs for indoor practice space. Mr. Glick has a 50 year relationship with Michigan Athletics. His older brother, Robert, attended the University of Michigan, and it was through him that A1 Glick made his first connection. Through the years he has had a special relationship with the U-M football program, including providing support for an Athletic scholarship fund. Through his encouragement, his entire family participated in the gift commitment of $8.7 million for the Field House, including his son, Randy, nephews Barry and Carl, and others. Mr. Glick's company, Alro Steel Corporation, partnered in the gift as well. He has also supported the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Women's Hospital. In recognition of this significant commitment from Al Glick, and the encouragement his gift provided to numerous other donors to support this project, recommend that the Board of Regents formally designate the Indoor Practice Facility for Intercollegiate Football as the Al Glick Field House."

We are probably most familiar with Alro because of it's sponsorship of Inside Michigan Football, i.e. the TV show formally known as Michigan Replay. Mr. Glick also likes to golf, and sponsors the
Alro Steel University of Michigan Golf Day at the Country Club of Jackson. (insert your own snipe here)

All in all, Al Glick seems like a stand-up guy. I couldn't find any drama about Alro---no news stories about lay-offs, bankruptcies, shady deals, or other shenanigans. Wonder if they'll let him watch practice once the building is in use!??

I wouldn't be surprised if the building was built using Alro Steel. Or any other current or future UofM buildings. I don't doubt that he's a standup guy and all but with big companies like this there is ALWAYS ulterior motives.

And why do they call it a building? Once it is complete it should be called a built. Same reason you park in a driveway and drive on a parkway.

I have a problem with any of these facilities being named after a person just because they donated a heap of cash. These things should be reserved for places like Yost Arena and Schembechler Hall named after important people that were part of the program. I'd bet that tuos has a facility named after Woody which is how it should be. I guess it is just the fell of commercialism that bothers me.

OT:: We going to get involved in the Blog Poll this year? It's up at MGoblog with details how to join etc. etc.
I think it would be a fun thing we could vote on weekly or something.
Or hell I'd even take the reigns if needed.

I don't have a problem with successful alumni donating and getting stuff named after them. The whole deal with Stephen M Ross at UM is probably much more convulted. (And $100M is a lot more than $8.7M) Usually it isn't even the donors intention that something get named for them.

FYI, Bob not only is there a Woody Hayes Athletic Center at OSU, there is also a Wayne Woodrow Hayes Chair in National Security Studies.

Keep in mind tOSU also sold the naming rights to its basketball/hockey facililty and thus the Value City arena from 1998-2008. I'm sure if that happened at UM, there would be rioting in the streets.

And by "convulted", I mean "convoluted".

1.2 trillion is a lot of revenue.

methinks T9 may have added 3 more zeros in error.

Hamm: We have thought about the blogpoll in the past and have decided against it.

While I watch a lot of college football, I don't watch enough to defend my random ranking choices.

I will leave this to the professionals.

But Andy therein lies the fun of it. Each week we can have an open thread to vote our rankings. Therefore you have a poll that is derived from many different minds and even fanbases.

T9's numbers are exactly correct. I also found it interesting that if you go to www.alro.com the company has a link to MGoBlue.com

My bad. For some reason I saw trillion and she put billion.

Hamm:

I've thought more about it, and if we can work out the process details -- I'd be OK with you manning up the Spawn blog-poll.

Send me an email at the spawn email address to discuss.

Way to Go Bigass...
Ever heard of looking a gift horse in the mouth??
I'm wondering what the Bigass family gave? I'm guessing something less than 8.7?? LOL

I work for Alro Steel, I have been there for 10 years now. Al Glick is probably the biggest fan of the Michigan Wolverines. He is very generous owner of a company, he treats his employees great and runs his business even better. U of M colors run through his veins, he deserves to have his name on there, not just because he donated alot of money.
