I can't think of a better way to start SPARTY WEEK 2009 than with a birthday party for Michigan legend Tom Harmon.Today would have been Harmon's 90th birthday. Rather than recall his success on the football field where he had more yardage and touchdowns than Red Grange AND got a standing ovation from the buckeye fans in the horseshoe - I want to remember the service to his country.
After winning the Heisman, playing pro football and making movies... Harmon enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the start of World War II as a pilot. He flew P-38s and B-25s and was twice reported missing: once in South America in the jungles of French Guiana where he survived for four days in swamps and forests before being rescued by natives and once in the mountains of China after failing to return from an attack on a Japanese-controlled port along the Yangtze River. He pretended to be dead and then was smuggled to safety by Chinese friendlies.
Happy Birthday Ole 98!!

Hell of a man in general!
Buffet note:: I don't see Tate playing this week. It would actually be smarter for him not to play unless there is a 105% chance that his injury can't get worse. If it could and he plays he could end up being lost for many many weeks and that would be a blow to the season. Tate is almost singlehandedly responsible for the success this season. Denard is just not ready and I actually hope they play Sheridan a bit against MSU. Keep him to the short within 10 yards passes and I think he does ok. Or line him and Denard in the backfield and give the defense something to worry about keeping more receivers open.
Hamm: Read the post from Brian. "IF" it is a sprain, there is no chance of hurting it further.
I am not a doctor, but I know some doctors. I will check with them to confirm.
"I am not a doctor, but I know some doctors."
I stayed in a Holiday Inn once.
I don't see how a sprain doesn't have a chance of being injured further. I've sprained my ankle countless times and it seems like it's so much easier to slip or twist it again and sprain it further. Maybe that's not making the actual injury worse but the pain increases exponentially. The MSU game will rest solely on the defense's shoulders. Regardless of who M runs out there to QB they will score some points. What's unsettling is thinking about how many points MSU may score on us. Although MSU is the first true team this season they've faced that doesn't run some form of spread attack and runs a more traditional pro-style offense so that should help us I think.
Andy - Nice tribute to Tom Harmon. His son, Mark and I have a lot in common. Mark was voted People magazines Sexiest Man Alive in 1986 and I could have been voted Sexiest Man Alive. What a coincidence, hey?
Phil, too bad you had the sex change operation in 1985 and ruined your eligibility. :>)
Whets, how did you like your one visit to the Holiday Inn? I guess you are not used to staying anyplace that does not charge an hourly rate or that does not leave the light on for you. :>)
BlueBob,
It was okay for a last minute tax write-off. I like to sample anything I'm expecting the common man to use. That's the kind of guy I am.
I can get you a special rate at any location and I'll throw in the plastic sheets for free. We call that our "Michigan Special."
and let's not forget his daughter Kelly, who you may remember as the "WRIF" girl---

or as the ad would say: "Baby!"
As an aside. Tom Harmon's Blocking back was Bob Kresji (sp?) my next door neighbor growing up. Bob was proud of his Michigan heritage and to drive my Mom nuts (Grandma Buckeye) would pretend to cut his awn every Saturday in his old Varsity jersey.
He too was in the Army Air Corps and was a navigator in a B17 and was shot down over Romania in 1944. He was rescued by the Russians. Just thought you should know about another REAL All AMerican in that backfield.
God Bless you Uncle Bob. (not really my uncle but we called him that)
