Gameday 2009 - Sparty Open Thread

There is a paradox in pride:
It makes some men ridiculous, but prevents others from becoming so.

Are you ready!!???

Work has been ridiculous and I'm glad to see Sept. in the rearview mirror.

Moo U comes early this year.

Weather here is blah---damp, cold, wet PERFECT for the game.

The key--imho--is to get the ball first, score on the first drive on some big dramatic pass/run play and deflate the already soft sparties.

Watch for sparty to get gassed and demoralized in the fourth as they can't keep up and as our guys get Barwinian.

oooooohhhh this is gonna be FUN

Cousins wants this game badly.

WTF??? Where's our team?! They look a bit OFF?!!?

Great job moving the ball on that last reg. drive!!! Amazing!! Wish we could have pulled it out in OT. Gonna be a tough week for the team at practice, I bet.
Let's shake off this game and get ready for next week...after I stew about this for a day or so. Ugh!

I hate that we lost, but I would rather lose in OT than 6-20. *sigh* It is still (and will always be) Great to be a Michigan Wolverine! Go blue!

Hard loss but never really saw "12-0" as a possibility.

Hopefully they'll build from this & make some adjustments for Iowa.

Blah...

I decided to go to the Eastern-Temple game but I was following this one on my phone. Did I see something correctly in the middle of the 4th quarter...13 rushing yards?

drove to the 517 and tailgated with a bunch of little brothers...typical friendly big bro/little bro tailgate that started at 7AM when the bloody marys were made--and at least 3 jagerbombs before kickoff, but I digress...

Sparty being Sparty was on all their minds after the game when we met at the post-game tailgate. Green and Blue agreed that if not for Tate Forcier, the game would have not gone into OT.

May the Forcier be with you and also with you, praise be to Rich Rod.

I'm not saying that 4-1 is better than 2-3 I'm just saying that it is...unless Coach Moment of Silence broke out with his "this win meant more than one win" take...

This'll sound like sour grapes, but...although state played better for most of the game, I didn't see a better team. Those long scrambles were killers, and the mysterious disappearance of the running game was troubling, but I saw a poor performance from us more than a great one from sparty.

Two things made it almost bearable: Graham's hit on Winston (who was a punk all game), and seeing Tate do his thing...AGAIN.

Think they can hire a hypnotist to convince Tate that every drive is happening in the last 2 minutes?

Jim,

can I ask for an "AHMEN and pass the sugar?"

As an impartial observer, I was wondering when the "Lil' Bro/Big Bro" moniker changes ownership?

Well, they'd have to win the next 36 in a row to even the series, so sure, any day now.

Not in my lifetime Whets -

Sparty better savor this win, as they won't beat Forcier again. That kid is something else.

Jim, et al,

I'm asking because the talking heads on the Big Ten Network were discussing an instate shift of power from AA to EL.

Apparently, the historical win/loss record isn't in their evaluation criteria.

I would think the deciding factor will be who wins out from here as you have two new programs struggling for instate respect: an interesting time in Michigan football history.

Mikoyan said...

Every so often they say that.

Jim said...

Two games do not make a trend. Talking heads get paid to be provocative. Look at their whole year and I can't see a sparty that's any different than they've ever been: flashes of competence with huge mental breakdowns. I may be looking through maize-colored glasses, but we seem to be pretty clearly trending up.

i am not a fan of running the 3-3-5 defense. The times we brought 4 into the box on D we got pressure.. we're just not big enough to bring 3 and contain any QB, especially when the team is not spreading the ball...

Michigan is captain of the in-state rivalry. We are at the controls and MSU is like our junior hostess. Although sometimes it gets out of control like in yesterday's news:

"Two pilots have been grounded after they allegedly left their cockpit mid-flight to trade punches with crew members in front of stunned passengers.

Severe turbulence broke out on the Air India flight after an air hostess accused the men of sexual harassment. The 120 passengers watched as the pair left the jet controls to brawl in the aisle with the crew, the Times Of India reported."

Ah, fun times for all. Go Blue.

If the caption of this photo reflects the look on coach RR's face it would be saying ... "I'm going to kick your little ass next time."

Yeah well M did nothing to deserve to win that game. The first half was plagued with receivers being hit in the hands with the ball and flat dropping it. The defense was actually better than expected but that of course left the QB open to run all day. It's like the defense is playing with 10 people all the time. It would have been nice for them to have won the coin toss in OT because the offense needed to get off the field. They were way hyped up after tying the game with 2 seconds left and had that invincible feel to them. Still they could have forced it to two OTs since Dantonio was trying to do everything he could to miss a game winning field goal before the defense fell over and let that TD through. Oh well I expected them to lose going into it. Freshman in a hostile environment and a rivalry game is not a good mix. I think they will play better against Iowa and think they can actually beat them.
Once again they wasted a few series with Denard in at QB. When are they going to learn? WHy haven't they lined Denard in the tailback slot right next to Tate? That would scare the shit out of any defensive coordinator. You've got Tate's super accurate arm and Denard's super accurate legs so what do you do? If you send everyone to stop Denard then someone is going to be wide open. If tyou drop everyone back then it's Denard on a roll out pitch and open field. If I know this then why don't people who are getting paid to come up with these things know this?
It bothers me.

They believe their own hype?

You know this quote applies much better to UM than State right? You guys fall all over yourselves to praise the great whit that was Mike Hart and then begrudge MSU a little joy for beating you twice in a row? False pride and arrogance are the defining features of a UM fan not MSU.

Welcome to our little corner of the internet. Thanks for your perspective, I love the blanket of false pride and arrogance. It keeps me warm at night.

I'd like to get an example on how we "begrudged MSU a little joy" ?

I have to agree with BAH on his analysis of the game. Many of the same thoughts were in my head as I was yelling at my TV. The commentators for the game even knew that when we put in Denard, it was going to be an ATTEMPT at a run play. I like BAH idea of putting him in next to Forcier. Freak the defense OUT!! Just a small question too-why does Forcier have his first initial on his jersey? Is there more than one Forcier on the team? I just don't recall any other players doing that, unless there were multiple players with same last name. No biggie, I was just Curious. Hope the guys can shake off last week and go get another win this week! GO BIG BLUE! LOVE MY WOLVERINES!!!
wv=flogem...yeah flog em and string em up by their toenails!!!

Andy said...

Forcier has his initial on his jersey - because there was a chance (now since disallowed by the NCAA) that his brother was going to be on the team.

Jason Forcier was at Michigan, behind Henne. Transfered to Stanford. He now attends grad school in Ann Arbor and had one year of eligibility left.

ohio_guy said...

I was going to ask about the initial as well.

Andy, what was disallowed and why?

Andy said...

Jason was trying to use the same rule that allowed Greg Paulus to play QB at Syracuse this season. It essentially allows graduate students with eligibility still remaining to play with for their new grad school without having to sit out like a undergrad transfer.

The reason it was denied was the NCAA rule that requires transfer graduate students seeking immediate eligibility to enroll in a program unavailable at their former school. Michigan and Stanford offer similar graduate degrees.

Jason was really just trying to be on the team to help his brother transition into college. He wasn't going to play.
