Ohio's Best team

HT: MATW and BAHammm

Oh my.... I don't know how I have missed this, but a local Cincinnati radio station is having a lot of fun with Buckeyes fans.

Radio Station WLW is the home of the UC Bearcats. They are undefeated and currently ranked #5 in the BCS standings and not very humble about it. I took a look at the future OSU football schedules and I see that the Buckeyes and Bearcats are scheduled to meet in 2012 and 2014. It looks like Governor Tressel needs to get his state under control.

A word of warning to Bearcat fans from a humbled Michigan fan: I am not sure how smart it is to antagonize these guys this way.

UC Radio 1: Two hands no thumbs

UC Radio 2: Call your football team

UC Radio 3: Pushed around by Navy

UC Radio 4: Arbitrary

UC Radio 5: Beat a ranked team
UC Radio 6: I'm gonna laugh

UC Radio 7: Who is the second best ?

UC Radio 8: Buy a ticket

UC Radio 9: Bandwagon jumpers

UC Radio 10: Embarrassing the state

Wow....I thought comments towards Ohio State from Michigan fans were brutal. Those comments come from a dark place like a team that has been living in another team's shadow for all these years and is starting to emerge. Ouch.

Never before have I wanted a team to win the NC more than I do now. Granted I don't give them a snowball's chance in hell and don't see them going undefeated but as long as the Buckeyes lose a game or two more we can hope to hear much more of this throughout the season. Maybe this will open up enough disdain in Columbus that when it comes time they don't hire Brian Kelly. That would be alright in my book.

Anyways, let's look at this through an analytical prism:
Nickname:
Buckeye - a poisonous nut.
Bearcat - The descendant of the famed Wildcat and Hellcat. Both were pretty respectable planes and the Bearcat probably would have continued the trend had the war gone on.
Edge-Cincinati. There is no way a Grumman product would lose to a nut.

City Name:
Columbus - Named after explorer who got lost and thought he was in India.
Cincinnatti - Named after Roman Dictator and Hero.
Edge-Cincinatti. I'll take the Roman Hero.

City Landmarks:
Columbus - The Horseshoe. And we know what horshoes are full of.
Cininnati - the predecessor to the Brooklyn Bridge (the Roebling Bridge), one of the early skyscrapers and a few other things.
Edge - Cincinnati. They aren't full of brown stuff.

Famous sons
Columbus - None
Cincinatti - None
Dayton - The Wright Brothers. What a minute...You get out of here, you.
But since Dayton is closer to Cincinnati than Columbus...edge Cincinnati.

Football Programs:
Columbus - The Buckeyes. Slugs players. Etc.
Cincinnati - Hmmmm....
Edge - The sluggers

Looks like Cincinnati wins this one.

Actually, I love this. My paternal kin is from Cincinnati.

This could wake up the slumbering admin folks at tOSU and force some secondary coaching changes. I don't see Tressel going anywhere at the moment. Let's see what happens on Nov. 21, regarding his future.

It's Senator Tressel by the way.

Wow! We've got our own "Little Brother" being birthed before our wondering eyes.

What a recruiting boon for UofC.

I just finished listening to the radio spots out of Cincy. Classic!
I'd give that guy a radio award of some sort. I hope nobody whacks him.

Whets....the little brother thing is what I was kind of implying. Those radio spots are just the sort of thing you might hear up in East Lansing. They were just the sort of thing I was hearing in Ypsilanti when Eastern made the sweet 16 and both Michigan and that other place were not. Of course, Eastern's basketball dominance didn't last (nor did they beat either other team that year...if I recall)

I actually think a little in state competition will be good for Ohio State so I don't mind. With any luck this will force a little more effort to keep things up to date in Columbus. Besides, the radio spots are funny and will make it more fun when things turn around (if we don't win in 2012 I retract my previous statement).

Mikoyan, the origin of the UC Bearcat is actually from a cheer based on a player named Baehr, the "Baehr-cat." Kind of an interesting bit of team name history.

I didn't think the team was named after the Bearcat of aviation fame, but I'm a plane nut so it sounds good....:)

lol at the little academic shots this guy takes at OSU. My response:

"I love ya Bearcat fans...but The Ohio State University is ranked number 53 in the nation. 53, that's 10 hands, thumbs included, and one with only 3 fingers. While the University of Cincinnati is only ranked...well, they're what's called a "tier 3" school, which simply isn't as good. Now this "tier 3" thingy means that over half of all the "national universities" in the nation are ranked higher than you, but it also means that you are ranked higher than all of the schools in the bottom 25%, so you at least got that going for you.

Just remember that the best University in the state, is in Columbus"

Andy said...

Actually O_G, the best school in the state is in Cleveland...

We are all familiar with this type of response and get your point

oops, my mistake. I should have remembered CW.

what's your criteria here?

Bigasshammm said...

Mikoyan being a huge plane nut myself I have to ask do you make it to the Thunder Over Michigan air show? We've gone a few times right there near Ann Arbor and it's probably one of the best private air shows in this part of the country. I love all things airplane and have flown on several. We will have to discuss sometime.

Arbitrary criteria based on the fact that nothing good could possibly come from anywhere in Ohio (except Neil Armstrong and the Wright Brothers).

ohio_guy said...

you're just mad that we were the ones who gave you the Lions ;-)

Brian kelly's bags are packed for bigger and better opportunities. he's just waiting for the phone to ring and/or Charlie Weis to be fired. it's been a blast so far, but it stands not to last too much longer and possibly never happen again.
BTW Mikoyan: Neil Armstrong lives in Cincinnati.

whetstonebuck said...

Does this mean the Columbus University has to give up the coveted "t"?

tUofC is a better rhyme.

Mikoyan said...

But Neil Armstrong is from Wapokaneta....I pass by the museum every time I go to the Air Force Museum.

o_g... I always wondered why I hated the lions so much. Not only were they from Ohio but were nicknamed the Spartans. I think I need to go puke now. That is all.

Here in Columbus, when you don't have anything else, (OK, the Blue Jackets and the Crew), then Ohio State becomes a religion. But with a son at UC, we fly a Bearcat flag in an neighborhood of OSU flags.

My wife, a former UCLA cheerleader when UCLA beat Ohio State at the Rose Bowl, is fond of telling the locals that fact, which does not enamor her to the local population.

And I thought the Denver Broncos fans were fanatics - they don't hold a candle to the OSU fans. OSU fans need to get a life. It seems that all they have to grab onto is OSU, and they are over-the-top fanatical about it.

UC Bookstore is selling a t-shirt that says Buckeye state, with the UC in Buckeye, as the UC logo - great stuff Brent Mussberger showed it on TV at the last game.

It is really nice, for once, that I can dish out the UC-is-better schtick to OSU fans - they are SO very fond of doing it the other way around, when they are on top! Go Bearcats!
