Just in case you have been living under a rock, Brian Kelly has been hired as the new head football coach at Notre Dame. He will not coach his undefeated Cincinnati Bearcat team in the Sugar Bowl game against Florida.I think Kelly is a great coach. He has done a great job at Grand Valley and Cincinnati. I have to admit, over the last two painful seasons I have thought many times about what he might have done in Ann Arbor. I am afraid he might just make an immediate and lasting impact in South Bend. I find it interesting that two former 'Nati coaches are now lined up as annual rivalry games for Michigan. I expect Kelly to be a little less abrasive than Douche-bag Dantonio, at least I hope so.
I understand that ND is a dream job for many college football coaches. But, how can a coach leave an undefeated team preparing for a BCS bowl game ? His players have every right to be pissed off.
For the record, I did not care for the way that Rich Rodriguez left West Virginia two years ago to come to Michigan. The storm following his departure is still a black mark on our program. I like this even less because RR's last WVU team was not undefeated and there was no apparent animosity between Kelly and UC. Shameful.
Discuss.

I would lovw to see Cincy come out and just annihilate Florida leaving it open to them being named AP National Champions. It's not going to happen but damnit it would be sweet. I imagine some hate mail from the kids parents of the players of UC in Kelly's mailbox in the future. ND has proven that it is the Yankees of college football.
I liked Brian Kelly...
The Yankees win championships.
Notre Dame..... not so much.
The Yankees have had their off years where they spend the most money with the best players and dont even make it to the playoffs.
Very much like ND
The Yankees have "not" made the playoffs once in the last 15 or so years. Notre Dame has not been in the National Championship conversation in 20 years.
I am not a Yankee fan at all, but the comparison with Notre Dame starts and ends with the large obnoxious fan base.
If ND could pay players to play there they would have the best players in the country bar none. They have an exorbitant amount of money much like the Yankees and are not afraid to flaunt it. Look at how much they wasted on Jabba.
I was just looking at the Lost University stuff on the buffet and decided that this is the reason Michigan has not been able to beat Ohio State over the last several years. Anyone who has followed Lost knows that the Dharma project was initiated in Ann Arbor. Michigan has not beaten Ohio State since Lost has been on the air. Must be something about the magnetic force of the island. The good news is that this is the last season for Lost so next year we may have a chance. That is all.
Uhh..... Bob. I think it's time to pick up a book. Any book.
Ahahahahahahaha...
Hemlock -- the master of subtlety.
Like I said in the other post, I think this is a pretty classless move on both party's part. Given that Cincy is in rarefied air. Oh well...I suppose it's life.
Agreed. Classless move by both parties.
Just one more reason to hate Notre Dame and a new one to despise Brian "Leave 'em Hanging" Kelly.
Maybe the NCAA should jettison some of their stupid rules and adopt one that disallows coach shopping till after the final bowl game. Too bad if it puts you late on the recruiting trail. That should be the downside to leaving your present job for greener pastures.
I disagree with all you "fairy tale - I have to have a father-figure coach who stays forever" bs. Football has always been a cutthroat game of war. It isn't nice, it isn't sweet. It's kill or be killed. College football, in particular, is a sport which eats up and spits out coaches (after it's put them through a pressure cooker you couldn't even imagine). Classy is when your mother-in-law tells you that you're a "no account lazy bum" and you still treat her like a queen anyway. In football there is no such thing as class. There are those rare marriages between a coach and a university i.e. PSU. But there are also relationships like Bobby Bowden, who invented greatness with FSU. The university builds a statue to him, names the field after him and then boots him out on his ass. Football is no different than life. I think ALL coaches would say Football is Life. Why should it be any different than the uncertainties that life gives us everyday? Hell, I say if a coach wants to quit during halftime, he has the right. That's life. Suck it up and continue on. Class my ass.
phil,
Just because it happens in life doesn't mean one can't rise above and set a higher standard. That's the definition of class. Everything else is status quo. Status quo is for underachievers.
Ethics, man! You recruit kids and their parents and then bail on them. Classless.
Football teaches about life, but it's supposed to be the best things about life: perseverance, sportsmanship, integrity, etc.
Whet - very well said.
On the field it's kill or be killed. But off the field, have some class. He owes it to his team to coach them through the biggest game of their lives.
Go Cinnci!
