I don't need to tell anyone here that the image of the Big Ten has take a hit over the last couple of years. Historical failures in the Rose Bowl and recent memorable flops have added fuel to national discontent. Add in the generalized perception of over sized slow players, Ohio State losing two straight BCS games, Michigan falling into the college football abyss and the wild fire is blazing. The flash point for this happened in November 2006 when Michigan and Ohio State were both undefeated and ranked #1 and #2 in the polls. Following an epic (and painful for me) contest there was a lot of talk of a BCS title game rematch (I wanted nothing to do with a rematch). The SEC PR engine (cough, cough, CBS sports) started up hasn't slowed down since.
The recent conversations about adding a 12th team and a championship game got me thinking: What would a B11 makeover look like? I decided to start with the helmets. Rather than just choose a few, I decided to include everyone. I realize that in most cases, a change is ridiculous. But hey, we are in the off-season and content is hard to come by.
I know, I know... I have too much time on my hands. In any case, I would be interested in hearing which of these you like best, which one you think is the worst, and any additional concepts or ideas you may have.
![]() | Illinois: This one is the most simple and obvious needed change of the group. The hideous orange version the current Illinois helmet is embarrassing. I know the NCAA would have a problem with using the Native American imagery, but I don't care. I also don't think the non-existent Illini Indian tribe would either. |
![]() | Northwestern: I have nothing against the current Northwestern helmet, but this is a complete overhaul project and everyone needs to participate. I went through a couple of iterations of this before I just settled with the simple text design. The actual Wildcat logo is an amateurish drawing and did not work for me. |
![]() | Wisconsin: I am a big fan of the mascot paw track. Not many people know this, but Wisconsin actually uses a Badger Paw as a trademarked logo. I included the classic Wisconsin "W" to eliminate confusion on which school is wearing these helmets. |
![]() | Michigan State: Sparty changes their design a lot, but they have never used anything other than a green helmet (in the modern era). After attempting to design a black helmet and a silver helmet using a Spartan image, I settled on this white version. MSU uses the state of Michigan on their basketball court. |
![]() | Minnesota: Of all the helmets in this project, I think I like this Gopher one the best. In fact, I had to stop myself from using other cartoonish mascots for more schools because I loved this one so much and did not want to dilute its awesomeness. |
![]() | Purdue: The Boilermakers rolled out all black helmets for the 1989 and 1990 seasons, but for the most part they have always been a gold with the Purdue "P" team. The smoking train logo is way cool and should be used more. |
![]() | Indiana: Indiana is one of the more difficult teams in the B11 to work with graphically. There exists no Cornhusker like cartoon Hoosier and there really isn't an alternative to the standard interlocking IU logo. Quite honestly even that looks like the greek letter psi. So I just made something up using a block I and the state of Indiana. |
![]() | Iowa: I think the current Iowa Hawkeye logo is one of the best primary trademarks in the NCAA. As such, I saw no need or had no desire to change their outstanding and distinctive design. |
![]() | Penn State:This when I expect the rotten tomatoes to start flying. From what I can tell, the current simple white helmet is as important as Joe Paterno himself. I went with the equally bland blue helmet with numbers as they had from '68 to '74. |
![]() | Ohio State: Before I start getting death threats over the loss of the Coors Light Silver Bullet design - you need to remember the Buckeyes wore scarlet helmets during 1966 and 1967 seasons coached by Woody Hayes himself. I resisted the temptation to put the cartoon version of Brutus and kept the chronic atta boy stickers. |
![]() | Michigan: I realize I am biased, but I think the existing Michigan helmet is a work of art. Attempting to make-over the winged helmet is like asking someone to augment the Mona Lisa. It just doesn't feel right. My first idea was to design a wolverine version of the USFL Michigan Panther helmet, but I couldn't get it right. So I just reversed the colors and turned my head away in shame. |
HT: Davidson at Chris Creamers Sports Logos Forum for the incredible helmet template.
1/14 edit: This post has generated a lot of interest (and hits). As you expect, everyone has their own opinion. Just so my intention is clear to anyone reading this -- This is nothing more than an conceptual off-season conversation starter. I DO NOT think that the teams from the B11 need to change their helmets (except Illinois). As a conference, we have some of the best helmet designs and color combos in the country. I was just playing around. If you don't like what I have done, fire up your computer and share your own ideas.
For my next project, I may do an SEC helmet makeover next just to see if I can piss them all off too.

Minnesota. Do you have any Alvin and the Chipmunks photos laying about?
Reversing the Michigan colors is almost common with so many high schools using the winged helmet as their design we see the various color combos.
You forgot ND

I miss the stickers that Michigan used to put on their helmets.
As for your helmets:
I like the MSU, Indiana Purdue and Illinois helmets.
Minnestoa is okay. The Northwestern one is...eh.
I like the current iteration of the Penn State helmets.
And I don't care what you do with the OSU helmets...You can put makeup on a pig...It's still a pig.
I pretty much agree with Hemlock.
Indiana could take their stripped b-ball warm-up pants design and put it on the helmet....
"You can put makeup on a pig...It's still a pig."
Jeez Louise, no matter the topic being discussed, Mik has to bring up the Michigan cheer leaders. Low blow, dude.
Whets, that was your sister in halloween costume.
I like MSU, and Illinois.
Loved Purdue.
+1 whettie
I just showed this to a guy I work with who is a State Penn alum and he liked the blue helmet with the white numbers. I kind of liked all of them with the exception of the color switch on the Michgan helmet. It kind of reminded me of putting stickers on the helmet, but I promised I would not go there for Andy's sake.
Good decision Bob.
If someone has earned a spot in an all star game and decides to wear stickers all over their winged helmet - far be it from me to question him....
For what it's worth, Indiana actually does have a logo that is very similar to the one that you used on the helmet, although it has the IU logo inside the state as opposed to just a block I. I can't find a GOOD example, but it's basically this: http://collegefabricstore.com/images/INDIANA-LOGO.gif
As far as Northwestern goes, you could do much better. That wordmark (which doesn't even look like an official one?) is much too large for a helmet and gray isn't a school color. I think one thing that you should consider more is how the helmet fits in with the rest of the uniform and not just how it looks on its own (although I do understand what you're doing).
Thanks for the insight and welcome to our site Keith.
I grew up watching Indiana basketball on local TV (sw michigan) and remember a logo with the state outline. I just could not find it.
Regarding Northwestern. I agree I could have done better if I cared enough. Technically their colors are Purple and White. Black is not one of their colors, yet they use it a lot.
I look at black, white, and silver/grey as nuetral colors that can be used to augment the uniform.
All 11 looked good to me - great job!
I know that there's a difference between logos registered to a University and logos registered to an Athletic Department (different entities), but I still would LOVE to see Wisconsin start to use this logo more often:
http://www.uc.wisc.edu/logo/download-logo.html
(Go down to the "Sheild W" to see the logo on its own)
I think there's something cool and traditional about those types of logos that makes me wish I could see it more.
Although not as epic as the UM-OSU rivalry, Iowa v. Minnesota breeds a healthy amount of hate and I think your helmet is the perfect advertisement for "Goofy Gopher" football!
Wisconsin has a "school crest" logo that actually looks like a beer label, which would be appropriate.
Interesting take on Iowa, knowing you have a thing for school colors that say gold but use yellow.
The color you use is very similar to a throwback uni/helmet the Hawks wore in 2004. The "old gold" of Iowa's school colors used to resemble the golden dome of the Old Capitol building on campus.
As far as messing with the Tigerhawk, the UI Athletic Department tried... once.

hmbfossil, be curious to know what the "school crest" logo you're referring to. Is it the same as the one in my previous comment?
Exile,
Yeah, that's the one. I submitted my post just before I saw yours. Bad timing on my part. Sorry.
I think you blew it on the Penn State version. They have a terrific logo in the Nittany Lion head in a football-type shape. That would lend itself perfectly to a helmet design. That is what you should have done for their alternative design. White with the blue lion head.
Yes sir, if it is on the internet, it must be true...
It only took them 10 hours to figure out Just some scUM guy's ideas for Big Ten helmets.
Rocket Scientists
Illinois and Wisconsin are fantastic. As much as i'm tired of seeing the same things over and over, the Penn State, OSU, and Michigan helmets should never be changed. Also I feel Iowa isn't as good as they're original. Minnesota is too cartoonish, and there's nothing wrong with the Spartan helmet, although your idea is a nice alternate.
PSU/IND/PUR/MSU/ILL - AWESOME
OSU/IOWA/MINN - ?ABLE
MICH/WISC/NW - UH,NO
just 1 fans opinion

Thanks for joining the coversation.
I originally made the Penn State helmet with the Oval Lion logo (the one they had, dropped, and revived). But given the current design, I wanted to preserve the vanilla nature of the program.
A white helmet with a blue oval lion would be very cool.
Illini fan here - is our helmet really THAT bad? Oof. I guess I've got blinders on. I admit it is boring, but, er... um... nevermind. I guess you're right. :(
Screw that, Michael. There is nothing wrong with Illinois' helmet. Orange is new red.
Here are some suggestions:
1. PSU

2. Michigan

Not bad - the only real clunker is the Minnesota design. I like the current Ohio State helmet, but yours is pretty good. Most improved - your Purdue design, which is far better than the current "P".
By the way, with the Big Ten doing very well this past bowl season, your initial observations are a bit dated, but the conference isn't out of the woods yet.
I like that you didn't use the oval Lion logo... I don't think it would look good on a helmet... our five toed paw print (I refuse to acknowledge that we switched to a four toed paw) might look cool: http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/sportsunlimited_2086_2056873814
I love the Illinois helmet, huge improvement.
You should of put prison bars on the MSU helmet.
