how in the world is Brett Favre able to play like that at his age??
I mean seriously.

I'm soooo rooting for New Awlins, though

I really did not care too much who won these games so it was very enjoyable to just be able to watch and not have to worry about it. I guess I am now pulling for New Orleans just because they have never been there. This now leaves the Lions as the only team who existed when the first one was played not to make it to a Super Bowl.

The Lions are the only NFC team not to make the Superbowl. There's still a few AFC teams. Namely the Clowns.

Once again my sports disappointment rages on. I wanted the Jets to win not because I like them but because I'm sick of the Peyton Manning abndwagon. How he won the MVP again over Brees or even Favre I have no idea. Also I wanted to see the Jets go to the Superbowl to show Browns fans just how good a coach Mangini actually is. Ha.

Then I have become a big Vikings fan mostly because of Favre. You have to respect a guy who's 40 years old and hasn't missed a start in 17 years. Some of the hits he took last night were vicious and he was still out there playing hard. The Vikings shot themselves in the foot so many times they should have won that game by at least 2 touchdowns. I'm pretty pissed off that the referees had to decide the game in OT by calling that bullshit pass interference. Sure it may have been PI but it definitely wasn't blatant enough to get flagged in OT of the NFC Championship game. There's no way the receiver would have ever caught that ball and Brees was just throwing it away to avoid a sack but had to throw it in the direction of someone because he was in the pocket still. Another Superbowl I could care less about. Maybe if the Saints win Reggie Bush will use some of that money to buy more recruits for SC.

Hammm... I know there are a few other teams that have not gone to a superbowl yet besides the Lions, but they were all new teams since the superbowl started. Even Cleveland has to be considered in this since the Ravens have been to a superbowl and the current Browns are really an expansion team.

I agree with you on that pass interference call and I also have no idea why they did not overturn that completion right after that which really looked like a trap.

Bigasshammm said...

The completion fell under the "indisputable video evidence" clause. I didn't think they'd overturn that but the PI call was ridiculous. It handed the Saints the victory on a silver platter. Games should not be decided by penalties unless they are blatant.

I wanted it to the be New Orleans vs. the Jets. But this is more for selfish reasons as for my Super Bowl party I try to include a dish from the teams in the Super Bowl. As New York has better food associated with it than Indy. And New Orleans is food heaven. I got half of my wish. But in years past I have had:
Clam Chowder (both kinds New England and Manhattan. One year was just that Manhattan Vs. New England Clam Chowder)
Crab Cakes for Carolina
Salmon cakes for Seattle
Ribs for St. Louis
A thing called a Devonshire Sandwich for Pittsburgh (twice)
Chicago Pizza and Hot Dogs (Indy in the Super Bowl and since I oculdn't figure out an Indy dish)

I'm not yet sure what this year's dishes will be.

what you guys are upset that Peyton Manning won some kind of award when he didn't deserve to?

Ahhhh sweet sweet delicious irony

Andy said...

Sru... please don't tell me you actually think that Charles Woodson did not deserve the Heisman in 1997 ?

Whatever scant hint of respect I might have had for you over these years will be blown away.

Bigasshammm said...

It's not that he's not deserving but it seems like every year it's his to loose. Favre had the best year of his long long career and somehow doesn't get the MVP? If Manning was 40 and had that sort of year do you think he wouldn't get it? Brees led the most potent offense in the NFL and had staggering numbers and didn't get it. The league is in love with Manning because he's the perfect poster child. He does commercials and doesn't do anything stupid and does whatever they want of him basically.

that and he leads his team to win after win with NO rushing offense to speak of....

GO SAINTS

srudoff said...

If he deserved it, then so did Chris Gamble in 2002

Their stats are remarkably similar.

Both played for Championship teams, well half championship for woodson.

Rushing: woodson 41 yds 1 td, gamble 49 yds 1 td

Receiving: woodson 12/238 2 td, gamble 31, 499, 0 td

punt returns: woodson 36/301 1 td, gamble 35, 293, 0 td

def: woodson 8 ints, 0 td, gamble 4 int, 1 td.

the big difference, gamble was a TRUE 3 way player. he played almost 75% of the total snaps in 2002 for the buckeyes. against illinois he played all but he also returned kickoffs. woodson occasionally played WR and did not return kick offs.

by mid year, no one threw gamble's way - he held all world andre johnson to 4 catches in the title game.

the voters felt like it was time to give it to a defensive player and woodson was in the right place at the right time. otherwise, why would he deserve it more than someone like gamble?

Where's the thread for the game tonight?

I think defensive players should get the Heisman more often. I'm tired of seeing quarterbacks and running backs get it. It's meant for the best player. sometimes the best player isn't one of the glory boys.

Hemlock Philosopher said...

Mikoyan - Suh should definitely have gotten the Heisman this season.

Sru - The Heisman goes to the best player that season, so comparing Woodson's stats to Gamble's from 1997 and 2002, respectively is not the appropriate tact. In 1997, Woodson not only had stellar stats, but he lead the team and made key plays (int and punt return versus OSU, for example). It was between Manning and Woodson... AFAIK, Gamble didn't win any national awards in 2002.

srudoff said...

hemlock - gamble had almost the same stats and also made huge key plays too - see the penn state game as a great example. INT for TD to seal it and keep the undefeated season alive. He also picked off Cincy and Wisky late in their end zones to preserve those victories, as well as a late pick against Purdue in the Holy Buckeye game.

So those are key moments as well. And again he played way more snaps than Woodson that year AND was a natural WR converted to DB by Mel Tucker in the spring.

Again I really think the voters felt it was "time" to give it to a defensive player - I also thought Suh was going to win it this year for the same reason, and in my mind, was much more deserving than Woodson or Gamble

interestingly enough, all 4 teams that made the conference title round have an equal number of Buckeyes and Wolverines. (NYJ 3 of each, MIN 1 of each NO and IND 2 of each)
