No longer afraid of the dark

The Michigan athletic department today confirmed what was rumored yesterday -- we will host Notre Dame for our first-ever night game on Sept. 10, 2011 at 8PM.

"This will be an unprecedented game-day atmosphere that our fans have not experienced at Michigan Stadium," said athletic director David Brandon. "It's a great opportunity to showcase our program, University and Ann Arbor to a primetime viewing audience. This also adds a new chapter to the storied rivalry between our two great programs."

"Our players have always enjoyed playing night games and I think it's something that our fans will truly enjoy and embrace," added Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez. "I expect the atmosphere will be electric for this match-up at the Big House."

Michigan Stadium has never before hosted a primetime affair. I think it is about time.

I do not like the idea of a night game, but we all knew this was coming. This will make for a very long day since I know we will still start our tailgate at 5:30am like always. My sons will have chance to get drunk and sober up two or three times before the game. Kind of like yesterday.

Hammm... This might be a good game for you to come up for if we can get you tickets.

to some extent, it's not a completely new event. 3:30 starts after September have often ended in the dark.

some of my fondest memories of M football over the last decade (and yes, i do have a few) came under the lights. Manningham's catch against PSU in 2005 & all of Da' Braylon's catches against MooSU in 2004 came long after sunset. i never saw any intrinsic problem w/ the crowd or parking after those games, so i think w/ a little planning, it should work out.

that said, this is somewhat akin to putting the lights up in Wrigley.

can't wait to read Drew Sharp's "Michigan doesn't need night games" column, followed closely by a Rosenberg/Snyder investigative report on how night games are really cheating & represent R2's "win at all costs" attitude (which isn't a "good fit" for Michigan).

a couple of my fondest OSU vs UM memories came under the lights as well

is that so. well, the 2006 game was a 3:30 start.

after that, what else do you have on the list?

or were you just being a smart ass & didn't really think that one all the way through?

Hope Richrod can get tickets! Sounds like it could be a good time

I thought Michigan has hosted a night game before. Could be wrong.

I'm talking about multiple memories from the same game, 2006. The 2 main after dark memories I have of that game are:

- Witnessing the long Pittman TD that produced that great "Michigan team photo" pic

- Being on the field after the game

2006 is the only OSU/UM game I've been to in person, so a lot of my best OSU/UM memories come from that one game, some of which happened in the daylight portion

Mikoyan,

I think you're a little confused since most stories about your games the last two years have started with "it was a dark day for Michigan football". : )

I think that a night game will be BIG fun.

That is, if the alumni can stay awake that late ;-)

Seriously, I think that this is a great idea. I know, I know. Old school girl just surprised you.

It's a great idea to catch Michigan up with the rest of the college football universe. I feel for the people living in the surrounding area that has to deal with all that traffic leaving the stadium at 12-1230am. Bob I do plan to be there. I can always get tickets whether via ebay or stubhub or wherever but i like better to get tickets from people we know. That way I know where my money's going. That may be a stay the nighter though as getting home at nearly 4am would blow. Plus after 18 hours of non stop alcohol we may all need the wheelchair seating in the House.

Several of my fondest Michigan football memories occurred "under the lights"

3) Mario Manningham vs Penn State
2) Braylon Edwards vs Sparty

... and for you O_G
1) 1985. Jim Harbaugh to John Kolesar.

If you are too young to remember, here are the highlights. Move ahead to 8:10 to see the play.

ah, T9, that's why we love you so much.

just when we think we have you figured out, you switch up on us & leave us wondering, all over again

Me not liking the idea of a night game has nothing to do with playing when it is dark out. As many have mentioned, we all have very good memories of plays in big games that occurred under the lights. The difference is that a true night game will just be getting started at about the time all of these game ending or near end of game memories happened. I am sure it will be awesome but we will all have to adjust our pre and post game schedules, rituals and traditions to this new timing. Up to now our tailgates have always started at 5:30am and lasted until about 10:00pm so a noon or 3:30 game did not matter that much. These night games will not even end until almost midnight so we have to adapt. I am sure it will be fun.

2011?

That will be the first post RR season. Who do you think will be coaching this historic event?

So entire city around me is watching bball. I probably have the only TV for miles tuned to the CCHA on BTN. Red & da Boys up 5-1 with 7 minutes to go.
life is good.

SIC... Just got home from the game and it was very exciting. We want to go to the championship game tomorrow but have a family thing to do so we will be trying to catch it on TV. They are playing very well at the right time and I hope they can continue well into the NCAA championships. You are correct when you say life is good and as always, it's great to be a Michigan wolverine.

I bribed the wife & bought myself a pass tonight. I know its tempting fate but I'm going to the game. If they don't win its all my fault!

Andy, what time did that 1985 game start?

Andy said...

If I remember correctly, the 1985 game started at 3:30.

SIC... Did you make it up for the game? We were able to watch it on tv and it was great. Kept the streak of consecutive NCAA championship appearances alive and they are looking good. Go Blue!
