No matter your politics, a sitting President of the United States of America just spoke in Michigan Stadium to the Class of 2010. AND commissioned the ROTC 2010 Graduates into the Armed Forces.
It was awesome! I live a mile from the Big House and I was able to see Marine Force One circling the stadium! It truly is great to be a Michigan Wolverine! Well done Mary Sue!
I'm gonna side with Catie on this one and bet that the Helicopter was circling the stadium. A modified 747 is a little big to be circling Michigan stadium even if it is a big stadium. :) I totally forgot to record this as I work Saturday mornings. I really didn't care to hear him speak as I am no kind of political but it still would have been cool to see him at the Big House. Naturally being Suckeye country I don't remember hearing anything about it on the news. But I also don't watch news and hate all media. So you know.
I remember many years ago when Old Bush was in our area. I was outside shooting hoops and his entire helicopter entourage flew over our house at about a 1000ft. It was like we were being invaded and was awesome. I love me some military aircraft and try to get to as many airshows as possible. You guys have a hell of an airshow about 15 minutes from Ann Arbor every year. Check it out!
It's definitely worth going to. It's a little crazier now that they've gone big time and have the Blue Angels there and moved the airshow across the field. Years ago when it was right in front of their old hangar that burned down you were right next to the planes as they were flying and parking wasn't such a fiasco. Also as their "home" B-17 gives rides I highly recommend that to anyone who has any grandparents or parents who served in the AAC or AF in WW2. My mom's dad was a waist gunner on a 17 and I took a ride on it years ago and it was probably the greatest thing I've done to date. It's well worth the 425 dollars or whatever it costs. I also think that's a write off too so you could have that going for you.
@hamm - have you ever been to the Cleveland Air Show over Labor Day weekend? They have some really cool planes there. When I first moved here I lived downtown in the Bridgeview. The F-16s went about 100 yards outside my window. Wow.
This year is probably going to be another lower key show. They aren't going to have the Blue Angels there. Just a bunch of warbirds (not that I'm complaining).
I may consider going this year then Mik. I love the warbirds more than all.
Hemlock I haven't actually been "in" the Cleveland Air Show for many many years but we do go every year. The best day to go is on Friday when it is the practice day and also the day a lot of the planes and the bigger static displays come in. We go right behind Cleveland Browns Stadium and next to the Science Center and park right along the water. If the wind is right the planes fly right in front of you on approach to land and you could literally throw a stone to hit them probably it's very cool. Also during the show we've always made it a point to go on the William G Mather steamship museum. They allow you to come in the museum and sit on the deck of the ship and usually serve food and drinks. Plus there are indoor bathrooms and opportunities to find shade if needed. It provides an elevated view of the flying and is a lot cheaper than actually going into the air show and a hell of a lot less crowd to deal with.
I "went" two years ago when I lived downtown and then last year we took my brother and my 3- and 1-year old kids. They got really scared. We sat on the pier between the science center and the Rock Museum. It is a great show.
Now that we live in Northfield, the blimp flies overhead from Arkon to the Cavs/ Indians games. My son finds that a lot less intimidating.
That's funny last year I took my then 1 year old daughter up on Friday and she for the most part enjoyed it immensely. Her and my 10 yr old niece got in our SUV whenever the jets were around but I did have her sitting on my lap accidentally when the F15 went by for the last time and it scared her. She loves planes though and everytime he hears one now she yells "plane plane look a plane" and runs and tries to find it in the sky. She's definitely daddy's girl :) We'll be back up there this year on Friday and may even go on the Mather again for the Friday show.
Andy, rest assured that I would never make the mistake of confusing the Air Force with any other service. I have dated enough military boys to know the difference (and what they all think of the Air Force boys!) I saw Marine Force One, not Air Force One!

Catie
Not a big deal, but I think I speak for all former Marines on here when I ask you NEVER confuse the Air Force with the Marines (...smirk...)
Not sure if it was a plane you saw, if so, it was, it was Air Force One. The Marines operate the president' s helicopters (called HMX-1).

Air Force One landed at DTW--and could be heard just a bit before 10AM as it was the only plane in our airspace.
Marine One (along with 4 other birds.. a few of which were Chinooks) brought the President over---landing on the outdoor football practice field

And this year it's the first weekend of August. I believe they are going to have 8 B-17's in the air...
