In 1791 angry citizens in the western portion (essentially Pittsburgh) of the newly created United States staged a small rebellion against the federal government because of a tax on whiskey. Tax collectors were terrorized and the tax was ignored. President George Washington mobilized and led 13,000 troops under the command of Harry Lee (Robert E's father) into the area of dispute. A dozen or so men were arrested and eventually pardoned after the agreed to acknowledge to federal governments power to tax them.In 2009 angry fans of the Michigan football program threatened to boycott Maker's Mark Bourbon because of a taunting banner (toasting Michigan's 2008 season) hanging from a sky scrapper in downtown Columbus. After 200 or so internet message board posts threatening to halt drinking Makers Mark peace was restored when people came to their senses. Thanks to our own SiC for sending the picture and confirming that this was not a photoshop project.
My take: Standing ovation to the brilliant local Columbus marketer that made this happen. I laughed when I saw it and chuckle thinking about it as I type this. It is stuff like this that makes our little rivalry fun. Instead of getting pissed off at Maker's Mark or angry at buckeye fans, embrace the rivalry and smile. I don't remember Wisconsin hanging banners in Minneapolis after the gophers only won 1 game a couple of years ago. I drink Maker's Mark and will continue to enjoy it. I hope to toast a Michigan win over Ohio State someday again before I die. Also, don't think for a second if Michigan was standing on top of the Big 10 football mountain and Ohio State just finished a 3 win season we would not be mocking them just a little bit. I lived through the John Cooper years as a Michigan fan, and there was plenty of mocking going the other way when we were winning.
Are they obsessed with us ? Sure I guess so, although I don't know why at this point. That is what makes this rivalry so much fun.
Are we obsessed with them ? Yes, definitely. We should want to get to were they are as a program. I am not ashamed to admit that.
Well done Buckeye. This drink is on me.

while this is awfully "big", it's hardly original. Cowtown billboards and store fronts have for years (during the good and bad seasons) have had "anti-michigan" slogans, and not just the local bars or tee shirt shops. last fall State Farm ran a series of auto insurance billboards touting the need for their product "in case you hit a Wolverine".
one funny aside- a lot of tosu fans aren't/weren't sure what to make of this. the toast to michigan's season, almost 3 months after it ended and only 6 months before the next one starts, left more than a couple people in our office unsure if this was a slam (about '08) or a salute (to '09).
deeply paranoid bunch these buckeyes...
I agree, I did chuckle a bit at the advert.
But I wonder if it was misdirected marketing.
I mean, can a Buckeye even afford a bottle of Maker's Mark????

Uh, Dudette, marketing is everything. Now where did this take place?
MM = Petty cash.
One of the tosu fans at work showed me this today and I had to laughed. How can you argue with something like that? Eventually we will "Make our Mark" again against those rotten buckeyes. :>})
I'll just tuck all this stuff away for when Michigan returns to prominence.

Mik,
I hate to be the one to break this to you, but when the above happens you won't have any memory left.
Whets,
You're right, more of Andy's naked Woody and Santonio buckeye pics and I won't have any more memory left in my scarred cranium. I need more healin', keep them Bikini Sunday pics comin'!!!
whets,
I'm not like Charles Rogers with the weed....I'll have plenty of memory left...
haha...that's funny
the fact that some Michigan fans are now boycotting that whiskey reminds me that I've been boycotting Papa Johns pizza since last year when one of their stores in DC gave away LeBron James "crybaby shirts" when the Cavs were playing the Wizards in the playoffs
though, there isn't a Papa Johns within 40 miles of me :-)

riiiiiiight
when i was taking the photo out thru the conference room window, both the staff manager and the file room clerk (ardent tosu fans) stopped and discussed their confusion about what it meant.
several other posters/commenters in other threads (such as MGoBlog) have mentioned the same occurence.
on the other hand, go screw yourself. (See "Arthur", 1981).
go post the pics on bucknuts and state that you can't believe that this company is actually saluting the wolverines in columbus
see how many people agree
You really don't know much about Columbus, do you?
Grew up in Cleveland & live in Chicago?
Lived here 4/5 years in college & since?
Yeah, you tell me about Columbus.
