Spawn Heisman Winner : Toby Gerhart
Congrats to Stanford's Toby Gerhart, he has won the Spawn Heisman vote. It really wasn't very close, as he took almost 40% of the almost 300 votes cast. Toby had the lead from the start and never gave it up. Nadamukong Suh finished in second place in our voting with 32% of the ballots cast. Mark Ingram and Colt McCoy finished 3rd and 4th. Poor Tim Tebow only got 4 votes from our readers. Ouch.
I expect the ceremony tonight in New York is going to have a much tighter contest and may even produce a different result.

Did you know the Heisman is no longer awarded in the NY Downtown Athletic Club ? The club was less than half a mile south of the World Trade Center and suffered major damage in the September 11, 2001 attacks. The club never reopened, and declared bankruptcy in 2002. The ceremony went to the Yale Club and the NY Hilton, but now has found a home in the Nokia Theater in Times Square.

Directors' Cup, bitches, Directors' Cup
The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics recently announced the Directors' Cup Winners. Stanford once again (actually for the 15th year in a row) takes home the hardware for Division I, but note the top five finishers if you will....and the school in the 10 slot. Yep, we're in the fifth slot behind some not too shabby athletic institutions. Our champs include (clockwise from top left): men's gymnastics, men's golf, women's water polo and softball.Grand Valley State won it's 5th straight Directors' Cup as well in Division II.

Spawnicon winner: Bo
Congrats to Spawn of MZone reader "scottcrocker" for his winning 'Bo Schembechler' entry in the Spawnicon contest from February. I got an email from him last week looking for the winners announcement -- but as you know I was in Florida (and not checking the Spawn mail account). Sorry for the delayed celebration scott, I will be adding your iconic creation to our sidebar sometime today.It really was not much of a contest. Bo secured over 50% of the 180+ votes in the final poll. There is no truth to the rumor that Desmond Howard hired Urban Meyer to campaign for him during the last days of the voting. I am hoping that Maurice can comment on this crushing loss in his blog.

Superbowl : Which Ad Wins???
As many would attest, the Superbowl is not just about the game....but also it is about the commercials. Luckily the game was very exciting, because the commericals were lacking compared to years past, but a couple of them stood out to me. So I thought I'd put together the first-ever Spawn of MZone Superbowl Ad Poll and hear what you think.A few things I noted from the outset:
1) Nothing from Detroit's Big 3, but a large number of entries from Toyota (they said TRANNY heh heh heh heh), Hyundai, and Audi.
2) Miller High Life placed a cheaper spot in the pregame stuff ranting about the cost of Superbowl Ads and how they only needed one second for theirs (called Warehouse). Then within the game they did a brilliant (and cheap) one second shout-out to "High Life". Hysterical!
3) I really needed the 3-D glasses and probably missed out on the SoBe fun (oh well)
4) NBC filled in with some 'free' advertising (including the LMAO syndrome, Alec Baldwin as an alien, Hereos football game, and Jay Leno in a 10 car) You can go to hulu.com to find them all.

Time for a playoff ?
So... after months of playing games, who is the champion of the 2008 College Football Season ?Florida won the BCS game, but they lost to Mississippi. Utah went undefeated, but they don't play in the right conference. USC looked like they would could beat anyone, but they lost to Oregon State. Mack Brown says Texas is the best team. I could go on and on... But quite frankly I am sick of the circular conversation.
I want to hear what you think. Let's start with this:

During the BCS game on Thursday Night T9 and I were texting (mostly about how Thom Brennaman makes me want to become a cricket fan) about how we should do a "playoff post" -- but neither of us got to it yesterday. And honestly, I think that neither of us wanted to jump into the details of how a playoff should be structured.This I believe:
1) The current system stinks
2) Division I College football needs a playoff system
3) The current bowl system should be included in the structure of the playoff system
4) The structure needs to account for teams outside the "big conferences" when warranted.
Everything else are details that can be decided and/or modified.
In the comments of my Tebow wallpaper post our friend Shorty the Beachcomber took the leap and typed his ideas on a playoff system. I don't agree with some of his details (going to a playoff game in Michigan Stadium in January is a logistical nightmare to me) -- but I appreciate his effort and felt it was as good of a starting point as any.
 Shorty's Playoff: We must keep bowl traditions, the importance of the bowl season, and have a playoff lead to the crowning of a real, undisputed National Champ. So here it is.The bowls are played with traditional alignments (Pac-10, Big Ten in the Rose Bowl etc). We must also take into consideration that the bowls may and should take a couple of days after the New Year so the Orange, Fiesta, and or Sugar can have primetime slots all to themselves. After the bowls are over there is a final poll and the top eight from that poll are then advanced into the playoff. 1 hosts 8, 4 hosts 5 etc. Two Saturdays after the last bowl game the playoff begins (so as to negate a serious advantage for New Year's Day or prior bowl winners who end up in the top 8 as they would have a significant rest advantage... no short week should ever lead a Sugar, Fiesta, or Orange Bowl winner into the playoffs) and continues for the next three Saturdays. That would place the title game by itself on the bye weekend before the Super Bowl at the end of January(which may become the Pro Bowl weekend) so that it does not compete with the NFL playoffs. The teams play a single elimination just like the Elite 8 in March with the top ranked team hosting in the quarter and semifinal rounds to award those with a "better" regular season/bowl performance. The National Championship will be at a neutral site and have all the built up festivities of a current title game, but this time the winner would be the undisputed champ (barring interference by refs). You keep the traditional alignments and rivalries in bowl games, and have them mean something more than before as a win or loss could be the difference between staying at home or going to the playoffs. |

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
While we all wait for Cripple Fight 2008, the rest of the college football universe anxiously awaits for Ohio State to play USC. Much like the last two National Championship games, I am torn on what I should be doing. On one hand, I want to see the Big Ten represented in a positive light, which means that I should cheer for the Buckeyes. On the other hand, I want so badly to see that team in scarlett and grey ground into little tiny bits, which means that I cheer for the Trojans.
More than likely I will just sit back and wish that we had the talent level of either team.
