Wallpaper Wednesday: Michigan Panthers

We are only a couple of weeks away from the spring football game. Ahhh, spring football... what a novel idea. For those of you old enough to remember, there was a spring football league for a couple of seasons in the mid 1980's. It was called the United States Football League. I was a big Michigan Panther fan back in the day. Primarily because they had Anthony Carter AND they had the best looking helmets in professional football. I remember the night they won the inaugural USFL Championship game like it was yesterday. Good times.

Rewind: 1979 Indiana

Homecoming week. Indiana. It was 30 years ago that my heart was forever sealed with Michigan maize and blue.

Michigan was ranked 10th in the country and highly favored to beat Indiana. However Lee Corso‘s Hoosiers were a solid 5-2 and they held a 14-7 halftime lead. After starting quarterback B.J. Dickey got injured the Wolverines ran their way back into the lead with a 50 yard Lawrence Reid touchdown and a Butch Woolfolk two yard plunge. IU had the ball in the final minutes behind 14-21.

Hoosier QB Tim Clifford connected with Nate Lundy for 54 yards before throwing a three-yard touchdownpass to Dave Harangody with 55 seconds remaining. Down by one, Lee Corso decided against going for the win and went for the tie by kicking the extra point. Today we celebrate our ONE YEAR anniversary with a wallpaper of my favorite #1 : Anthony Carter.

Back-slaps, high-fives, and huge pieces of cake to everyone. 534 posts and (gulp) 3 wins later, we have come a long way since this.

It has been a lot more fun than I expected when I agreed to jump into the fire with T9. I know that we both can't wait until we once again have a decent football team to blog about.

Wallpaper Wednesday: Ford, AC, and Bo

A couple of weeks ago when I was looking for a wallpaper capable photo of Gerald Ford as a Michigan football player I ran into this great photo of Ford, Anthony Carter, and Bo at the Michigan practice field on South State Street. According to the Gerald Ford Web Site, this photo was taken on November 10th, 1982.

I know this sounds absurd, but if there was ever a Mount-Rushmore-like monument created for Michigan Football -- I would not be surprised to see all three of these faces carved into stone.

Happy Birthday Anthony Carter

Today is Anthony Carter's 48th Birthday.

AC was a 3-time All-Big Ten and 3-time All-American. In 1980, his teammates voted him the Most Valuable Player Award, the first time for a sophomore at Michigan. In 1982, he was Michigan's Captain and named the MVP of the Big 10 Conference. In his career he had 36 touchdowns, 33 on pass receptions. He scored 240 points, which was a Michigan record, breaking the previous mark of 237 set by Tom Harmon in 1938-40 seasons. Michigan had a 35-13 record in his four years in Ann Arbor, won two Big 10 Championships. His teams went to four bowl games, and won the Rose Bowl and the Bluebonnet Bowl.

Wallpaper Wednesday: Number 1

(Queue the Sesame Street Music) This weeks Wallpaper Wednesday is brought to you by the Number One, and will hopefully mark victory number one for Coach Rich Rodriguez and the 2008 Michigan Wolverines.

That special uniform number first rose in significance in 1979 when a 5-11 160-pound receiver from Suncoast high school in Riviera Beach, Florida arrived on campus. The first time Anthony Carter touched the ball as a Wolverine he returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown. By the time his career ended four years later, he had rewritten the receiving record books in Ann Arbor…setting new marks in touchdowns (40), points (244), receptions (161), yards (3,076), touchdown receptions in a season (14) and touchdown receptions in a career (37).

When Lloyd Carr secured a commitment from Braylon Edwards in the fall of 2001 the young recruit told his new coach that he wanted to wear the number because he grew up idolizing AC. Coach Carr responded "You can have it, but you have to earn it first". Braylon eventually did (he wore #80 for two years) and continued AC's legacy of excellence.

In 2006 Braylon endowed the University with a $500,000 scholarship for the Michigan #1 football jersey to recognize future athletes who demonstrate character and commitment both on and off the field.
