"Sports" Science Friday--BEER PONG AND BONG

Well dear reader, in the spirit of keeping Yost alive, I present to you these pretty cool links for our Science Friday:

A) the
physics of beer pong as demonstrated by some truly industrious collegians brought to light by Adam Weiner over at http://www.popsci.com/
For the physics savants in the crowd Adam offers up an explanation of two- and three-dimensional projectile motion, utilizing the constant downward acceleration due to gravity calculated with:

Δy = v0 sinθ t – 1/2gt2

and a constant velocity once the ball is released, calculated using:
Δx = 2.4 m = v0cosθ t

B) The
Instantaneous Acceleration and Force of Beer from a Beer Bong as calculated by Alec Venechuk. He calculates the instantaneous force from a double beer bong as 7.59 newtons.

No idea if that is a lot or not. Any physics phact phinders out there to help????
Or do you just not care with all them bikinis down there with their hands in the air???
WORD UP

C) for extra credit....and gosh knows how many billions of our tax dollars, straight from NASA a description of
forces on a baseball

I kid you not!

Enjoy the weekend!!
It's hot and humid as all get out here, and the place is crawling with Art Fair folks..........

Nice reading. I enjoyed the bodies in motion visual for the beer bong.

In a fluid dynamics class I took in school, our professor had a retired prof give a guest lecture on the dynamics of a curve ball. The guy (forgot the guest prof's name) came to class dressed in a throw back era baseball uni, had a glove that was as old as he was that he passed around, and gave a very good, very humorous lecture.

I think my favorite MSE class of all time was on the physics involved when using a graphite driver vs. an old school driver. Not that being my favorite lecture was tough. God I hated that class.

Physics was my favorite class in HS (yes I didn't go to college "loser loser loser") and the teacher was one badass mother fffer. Retired captain of a submarine, nuclear safety inspector touring the globe, ex mayor, hell of a man. But anyway sorry for the absence that little (Big?) brown shipping company has been working my ass off this week and I have had no time till now to even check mail. Doesn't seem like much is happening on the group side of life but glad to see this blog going well. I raise a beer to all of you this evening as I wait till I pass out which won't be very long from now.

BAH - I keep meaning to post the two Science Friday ideas on the Yahoo board, but work and home life have me quite busy as well. I hope to this week,

I'm clicking on the picture with the girls in bikinis but the picture won't enlarge and I'm not going to be able to understand this physics concept until I can get a really good look at it. So this lesson is totally lost on me until much larger visual aids are available.
