T9 is right. It took me a little more than 24 hours, but it is time to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and what we really need is some good 'ole Michigan arrogance (delivered to you in a 1600 pixel package).Based on the way the season has gone so far, there is a pretty good chance that our 11 year and 9 game ownership of Penn State will get foreclosed sometime on Saturday evening in Happy Valley. In the mean time I am going to have some fun.
I have to admit it has been a lot of fun beating up on Penn State so many times in a row, more specifically it has been a LOT of fun listening to their fans alternate between complaining about their coaching and bitching about the refs.
What a ride it has been. Many thanks to Wolverine Historian for the YouTube clips.
1997: Leading up to the game ABC dubbed it as "Judgement Day" because several high profile ranked teams were playing each other. Michigan rushed for 265 yards and held Penn State's heralded offense to fewer than 200 total yards. Charles Woodson and company completely dominated the Nittany Lions on their way to the Rose Bowl and National Championship. Michigan 34 Penn State 8.
1998: Michigan's dominate defense shutout Penn State for the first time in in more than 10 years. QB Tom Brady and the Wolverine offense cruised to an easy victory. Brady threw for more than 200 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan 27 Penn State 0.
1999: The Nittany Lions were ranked higher, playing at home and held a 10-point lead with less than 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter when Michigan and Tom Brady stole the win and cost Penn State a chance at a Big Ten title. Michigan 31 Penn State 27.
2000: Coming off a loss to (gasp...)Toledo -- Penn State could not handle RB Anthony Thomas (35 carries, 171 yards) or QB Drew Henson (212 yards, two touchdowns). The Wolverine defense also forced four interceptions. Michigan led 27-11 when a young Chris Perry scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run with one second left on the clock. That did not sit well with many Penn State folks. Michigan 33 Penn State 11.
2001: The Wolverines maul the Nittany Lions in State College. The defense limits Penn State to just 26 yards rushing, records two picks and recovers a fumble. Penn State drops to a dismal 0-4 and for the first time in Joe Paterno's 36-year coaching career, the Nittany Lions are shut out at home. Michigan 20 Penn State 0.
2002: In the first overtime game in Michigan Stadium history, the Wolverines defense holds Penn State to a field goal before Chris Perry pounds in the game-winning touchdown. Penn State complains about an out of bounds call to the Big Ten. Michigan 27 Penn State 24.
2005: When Penn State QB Michael Robinson scored on a three-yard run with 53 seconds remaining to put Penn State up 25-21, it looked like the streak was over and Michigan would drop to 3-4. But Steve Breaston returned the kickoff to the 47-yard line and Chad Henne led the team down to the 10-yard line. On fourth down with just one second remaining, Henne found Mario Manningham on a slant pattern in the end zone to steal the victory from Penn State. It was Penn State's only loss of the season. Michigan 27 Penn State 25.
2006: Michigan entered Beaver Stadium with an 7-0 record. Penn State was anxious to return the favor from the previous year. The defense holds the Nittany Lions (previously second in the Big Ten in rushing) to minus-14 yards on the ground and knocks two Penn State quarterbacks out of the game. Michigan 17, Penn State 10.
2007: Penn State loses to the team that lost to Appalachian State. With Chad Henne hurt, Ryan Mallett starts at QB and does not fumble on every play. Mike Hart rushes for 153 yards and scores the game winning TD in the 4th quarter. Michigan 14 Penn State 9.

bless your cotton-pickin' maize and blue heart andy and wolverine historian!!
Sound track for this post?
Bruce Springsteen's Glory Days!
Let's see 9 games to watch, each YouTubes about 5 minutes....hmmm, looks like I'll be at work at least an extra hour to make up for the time spent relishing :-)
oh...and one more thing...
mmmmmm KEITH JACKSON WHOA NELLY!
Red meat for the faithful and bulletin board material for the enemy. Yowza!
"Penn State loses to the team that lost to Appalachian State"
careful with that
otherwise Michigan becomes the team that lost to the team that lost to Wofford.
And of course Wofford lost that year to Elon
so Michigan is the team that lost to the team that lost to the team that lost to Elon
either way it's not pretty
The faithful need more red meat (and offensive lineman that can block) -- while the Nittany Lions don't need any more bulletin board material. If 9 losses in a row doesn't get you fired up, nothing will.
wv = chlrfn (as in inhaling chloroform vapors depresses the central nervous system of a patient)
Yes Sru. It gets better...
As in Ohio State lost to the team (Illinois) that lost to the team (Michigan) that lost to the team (Appy State) that lost to the team (Wofford) that lost to Elon.
Andy,
i'm sure PSU fans had forgotten all about their 9 game slide until you went and reminded them of it! if we lose now, it's all your fault!
Man O man. You just don't get it. Sure, PSU has a memory. They've got ample motivation to beat your team. However, rubbing their noses in the past trumps standard motivation--it's about respect.
PSU really thinks they're the cock of the walk right now. Folks in that position are a little sensitive to disrespect.
What you got brewing here is a solid win by PSU versus "let's leave the first team in until the fourth quarter. Fifty points ought to command a little respect...for years to come."
No disrespect to the Wolverines; I'm just sayin'.
Seriously, if the Penn State football staff actually reads this blog AND is so outraged they need to score some extra points on Michigan this weekend because of what is posted here - I will eat my hat.
Joe Paterno doesn't even know how to turn on a computer.
Seriously,
You know they do.
You may be right.
I got to tell you, we are getting a lot of hits today from a couple of the Penn State forums out there. I may have underestimated the angst they have for us.
I fell like I am a soldier in the Germania Army in the opening scene of Gladiator.
People should know when they're conquered.
At my signal,unleash hell.
"People should know when they're conquered."
Don't know that I would have written that.
Great scene from Gladiator.
Doesn't the. Spaniard look @ him & ask: "Would you?" (Or something to that effect?).
As a part of the blogworld legion defending a dying Empire facing the barbarian hordes, I think the quote is spot on!
"As a part of the blogworld legion defending a dying Empire facing the barbarian hordes, I think the quote is spot on!"
I'm sure you do. Only problem is in this scenario JoePa is the one speaking it.

I say Bring It!
In 1997 we all thought that PSU was going to wipe up all over the football field snotty noses first....and look what happened.
Post this in Happy Valley. Go ahead.
SHOCK THE WORLD BABY!!!
too much false bravado????
hmmmm
ok...please please don't hurt us and send us home crying to mommy...
That's the spirit. Only reckless abandon, bravado, & sheer arrogance will carry us thru these dark days. That, blind faith, and liquor.
And whets is almost correct. I can't think of any other team or fan base that you could cast better as the barbarian hordes.
Geez I found out that dish doesnt let me have btn anymore. I was pissed enough to complain. (didn't help) Now I think they did me a favor. I spent the afternoon taking my wife to lunch.
the difference is andy, that we're not the team going around using the "team that lost to the team" crap.
we're the team that beat michigan
6 of the last 7 years, soon to be 7 of the last 8 years
end of sentence
Hey Srudoff....
don't go counting your chickens until they have hatching. You have not beaten Michigan yet, although it is a likely possibility but still....
yeah Sru. Be careful.
We are going to sic our little brother on you this weekend!!!
sru is, sadly, classic nouveau riche. all football history begins in 2007. the '80's & 90's never took place.
which, for a program that goes around supposedly priding itself on all its "traditions", is pretty ironic.
Spoken like a true patrician.
history to me goes back to about 1972 - when i was old enough to actually root for a team
the last 7 years have been beautiful - payback for the cooper years fo sho
SWEET word verification! "dudeph"
