Many of you know that I am a pretty HUGE Philadelphia Phillies Phan.
I was flying to Washington DC this morning. When I landed I got this text: "God Bless Harry Kalas..." It took me all of about 20 seconds to figure out that the longtime voice of my team had died. If you don't know the name, I guarantee you will recognize the voice from NFL films.
Sad day for me. Thanks for the memories Harry.

And Mark the Bird Fidrych.
Rest In Peace.
um, and Marilyn Chambers.
I'll let you figure it out
God I love NFL Films. There is no production company that can make their subject so glorious and uber-manly like NFL films can (think Mandles, that's pretty tough stuff). Harry was a big part of those memories.
Has anybody heard Dave Niehaus call games for the Seattle Mariners, particularly in the late 90's when he'd call those amazing spiderman Griffey catches and the Grand Salamis? He called the ALDS Double by Edgar Martinez that sent Griffey charging home, beating the Yankees in '95. He's a helluva broadcaster and a personal favorite for baseball.
For sports broadcasters all-time I'll put my favorites like so.
1. Bob Ufer... duh, no contest.
2. NFL films voices.
3. Keith Jackson.
4. Dave Niehaus.
5. Team of Pat Summerall & Madden.
Versatility award:
Gary Thorne
Solid stuff in hockey, baseball, and football, hockey by far his best.
Up and Coming award:
Troy Aikman
Best analyst on NFL Sundays today
Most Overrated:
That Mexican soccer broadcaster who says, "GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLL!"
T-9,
You stay classy and away from that green door.
Call me a homer but I'd have to add Ernie Harwell to that list. I'd also add Ken Kal since I never really listened to Bruce Martin.
I also like Jim Brandstetter when he is doing the Lions games. I imagine him with a bottle of whiskey as he's covering the games.
I grew up listening to Richie Ashburn, Bill Campbell, By Saam. When Harry Kalas came with his great voice, I knew we were blessed to have him. When we lost John Facenda's (NFL films) voice the city learned to appreciate Harry. He will truly be missed by all of the Phillie Phans no doubt. Thanks for the article.
