The Eight Faces of Pain

As a kid I used to love watch Bo Schembechler prowl the sidelines of Michigan Stadium. Just like his mentor Woody, he had no problem telling an official how he felt things were going or instructing a player on the importance of flawless execution. The thing I loved most about watching Bo during these moments was there was no question on how he felt and what he was thinking. He was all-in. As a result, his teams played with fire and emotion.

Watching Rich Rodriguez closely now over the past five games gives me the same sense of emotional transparency. I have no idea on how Bo would have dealt with the 2008 Illinois game if he had been the coach. I like to believe that he would not have needed to deal with it because his defenses would have played better. In any case, RR was not be pleased and is not afraid to show it.

1. Late 1st quarter. Toney Clemons has just caused an illegal man downfield penalty because he lined up incorrectly as a wide receiver. This cost Michigan a touchdown (we scored few plays later). This is the same penalty that gave Michigan the win against Wisconsin.

2. As the momenteum shifted to Illinois in the 2nd quarter, Michigan tried to get the offense back on track. Brandon Minor did not run the correct route, costing the team a chance at a big play and needed to punt again.

3. Again in the mind melting 2nd quarter, the usually spectacular Zoltan Mesko punted the ball into the endzone rather than "pooch" it into a corner.

4. Things don't get better in the 3rd quarter... coming off of a time out, Sam McGuffie was somehow the 12th man on the football field causing an illegal substituation flag.

5. The offense eventually gets a couple of first downs late in the 3rd quarter when Steven Threet and Michael Shaw just fumbled the ball on a simple handoff. Shaw got the most of this lesson, personally I think the error was on Threet.

6. Michigan finally answers after 28 straight points from Illinois with a 4th quarter touchdown. The game is still within reach if we play perfectly from here on out. All momenteum is lost with a blocked extra point.

7. 4th quarter, need a defensive stop. John Thompson gets a pass interference (incorrectly called on Obi Ezeh). Illini receiver was at least 2 yards short of the first down marker. Extended back breaking drive.

8. 4th quarter, Juice Williams has just run 50 yards up the middle of the field in a QB draw. He is caught just short of the endzone. The defense stops them for 2 plays, but gives up a TD on an option play. Game over.

very good work w/ the photo collection.

Lloyd was always a little too stoic for me, but he was at least honest (if cranky) about things he would discuss.

so many coaches sound like corporate spokesmen or poitical spindoctors. double speak and ducking answers, their interviews are jokes.

Bo & Mo, along w/ all the coaches i ever had in high school, were all screamers. loud, bossy, and animated (and didn't know any Irish poets, either).

maybe it's bad family values, but i like seeing someone who is pissed when they should be pissed, and kicking someone's ass, when they deserve an ass kicking.

SiC: Thanks for recognizing the work it took to get this post done.

I could not sleep very well last night because I forced myself to re-watch that ugly f*cking game so I could capture his faces.

dude, seriously, how did you get that data, transfer it to the computer, AND post it???
you are one techno savvy guy!
I'm jealous!
I tried to do this big ol' power point thing at work with an embedded video and the thing would only project the windows screen + sound without the video.
The boy's got skills!!!!!

Speaking of transparency---I've been thinking about the difference b/w Lloyd's administration and the locked-down nature of Schembechler Hall as compared to the open door policy of RichRod. Coaches videos, multimedia on MGoBlue.com, footage from the locker room, special tape with Brandstatter after the game--I mean enough. Right? Shouldn't there be some mystery and intrigue around what happens at Schembechler??
Where's the romanticism??

T9- watch out! Whets senses your vulnerability!

And yes, all this open communication is disturbing- particularly when the news is all bad. With Lloyd, we could always lie to ourselves. Not anymore.

Andy,
Kudos for the effort - not just the post- but watching the game over!

I haven't been able to do that since 1988.

FYI, we made the varsity with this one.

Andy,

Congrats. You earned it.

SiC,

Curse you. Warn not the fair damsel.

The only picture that made my spine freeze is the first one (Bo).

The others, not so much.

It is good to see a coach get spirited. Shows he cares about what is going on. Unlike the Browns Fat Romeo who just stands on the sidelines chewing cudd all game. Can Cleveland borrow the "Fire Millen" team to sponsor a new slogan "Fire Romeo?"

I think the "Fire Millen" folks are going to switch to "Fire Marinelli"...

Bo went through the same problems his first year as RR. Third game of the season Missouri blasted the team 40-17. Fifth game we got edged by MSU. Bo started 3 and 2 and people were hollering for his ass. Well we won the next 5 beating Ohio State in the big game earning the right to go to the Rose Bowl...which meant something in those days. What I'm saying there is alot of similar shit between the two first year coaches. Of course we never let Illinois beat us...in fact accumulated score for '69, '70, and '71 was a conbined 140-0 or soething like that.

I really thought that RR would make the entire season devoted to beating O$U. Especially at this point, and I really think they had a chance. Until they started play TP exclusively and he will just run all over them like Juice Williams. If TP can get hurt somehow (hitman?) and Beockman has to play I think we can stop their I-formation-panic in the pocket offense. If it's TP then we're in trouble and it will just start his legacy and make us all vomit.

hammster,

You're just saying that to make my day. Very kind of you.

SiC, observe and learn.
